The Squirrel Hunting Thread 2016

ab_bentley

I fix stuff, sometimes....
It's that time again, the next five months in Ohio is squirrel season. I would encourage anyone hunting squirrel this year to post your quarry and the firearm used.

This year I'll be hunting with a 22Lr Remington 40x and a 10/22 both suppressed. Only head shots on my part and I'm going for a total around 250. Last year in my back yard I managed 107 in 30 days.

There may be some among us that view squirrel hunting as the be all/ end all, as I do, and would like to share.

I'm almost embarrassed to say it, but I haven't even been out yet. :(

Usually have at least 20 or so by now. I use a CZ 452 Lux in 22rf with a 3-9 scope on it. Head shots only. I usually get between 60 and 100 in a season. WD

I've always considered squirrel hunting as a great way to sharpen your hunting and shooting skills. Fact is it used to be one of my favorite hunting seasons, along with ruffed grouse. But now I live in Washington state and there just aren't that many squirrels. I'm jealous. I've even tried to find a guide to hunt squirrels in northern CA. I'm sure they think I'm crazy.
An accurate 40-X, head shots only. Sounds great. Have fun.

Thread brings back memories, all good ones. The neighbor farmers that I baled hay for, and shoveled corn, those huge old fox squirrels, that beautiful model 39 Marlin, hickory nuts, clean crisp fall mornings. Man that was 50 years ago and the best place in the world for a boy to be!

And finding fall mushrooms and or puff balls to have in the squirrel gravy is a rare but delicious reward too. :) WD

If anything would leade me to wanting a can, it would be squirrel hunting, got to be a great time!

Squirrel and Rabbit gravy is the best there is. Put a squirrel in a pressure cooker for 7 minutes, then fry, dang, that is some good eating!

Good luck, and thanks for posting!

I wish we were allowed to have cans for RF rifles here in NewYorkistan.

I have to wait til the middle of next month to start the 2016 squirrel season here in Pennsylvania. Been shooting the 221 FB on and off at targets and a few groundhogs all summer and its sitting on ready.

Been to warm here , in 80's and 90's . Season started Saturday , but it was in mid 90's and humid . I will wait till it cools down some more , too many worvels and other parasites right now , at least here .
But it does make for some fine eating , usually use a CZ Scout with an old 7 power leupold with AO , Yo Dave trigger kit , and Eley sub sonics . One bad combo .

Planning a trip up into the hardwoods this fall for bushytails. I have an old Westernfield bolt action 22LR rifle with a fine plex 4 power scope and a 24" barrel. I use subsonics and with the longer barrel, it's pretty quiet. Not suppressor quiet, but quiet enough. I too only take head shots. Also get to see all kinds of other wildlife and sometimes I enjoy myself so much, I fall asleep in the woods!

Had a damned old dog that weren't much good for anything but squirrel huntin. When them critters went around the back side of the tree, you send him round the other side and they'd come round to your side so you could get a shot.
Other than that, he chased the chickens and ducks to show'em who's boss, and then lay in the way on the front porch.
Oh yea, he always had gas, bad!

Didn't have a squirrel dog, tossed my cap to the back side of the tree! Worked sometimes.

"Tossed my cap"
Rep , a stick , rock , or anything to spook him back around . A fellow moved up here from Georgia when we were kids , a little red head boy . We became friends and went hunting together often . He showed me a few tricks , squerril went in the hole at about head high , he told me to hold his rifle . He had an old suede looking hat , he dipped in the creek and kept pouring it in the hole , finally that squerril came out full steam . He grabbed the rifle out of my hand and took off running . Running and shooting . I was taken back as I had never seen anybody do this and it went against what I had been taught , safety wise , wasting bullets , and hunting manners for lack of a better word .
I would have followed along behind the squerril waiting for him to settle down and then tried to stalk into shooting range . He did get the bugger , but he must have shot 8-10 rds .
It was fun to watch but seemed a waste to me .
Then another time one went in the hole and he cut a long limber hickory stick and cut all the limbs off but the end with about two or three inches of fork sticking out .
He handed me his knife and said stick him when I bring up in the opening , lol , I thought he was nuts . He ran the stick down in the hole twisting it till he made contact , the little fellow was making all sorts of snarling , growling noises , finally he started pulling the stick out still slowly twisting it . When he got him up into the opening I stuck him right in the neck .
Was the only time I did it as it seemed a little extreme to me , outside of pulling a couple of wounded ones out , but it worked and wouldn't hesitate to do it in a pinch for food .
