The [so called] Robinett 30 BR reamer- exposed.

The guy's in our club are not getting the "famed" accuracy from their 30BR's that was promised. One guy went back to his 6 BR. I don't know any specs or details other than listening to them complain about group size and/or turning brass.

Much appreciated,@RGRobinett, I'll make inquiries at Shilen (and a few other barrel makers) about the neck dia.
If I understand your post correctly, a .330 neck dia would be on the small side by a thou or two. What would be the issues I should expect to encounter if a larger neck size is not available? Would turning the necks be required? In shooting 30BR, should I expect to turn necks as a general rule if I'm planning to be competitive?

There are no, "issues" with the .330 chamber neck-diameter: the finished neck-wall is simply thinner. The individuals I know, who went the, "no turn" way, didn't remain there - before long, they were, "cleaning-up" the necks and removing the built-in taper. IMO, yes. And don't rely on, "off the shelf" bullets - you'll be leaving the EDGE on the table. The bench-rest adage: "Barrels; Bedding; Bullets"; is neither misconception, nor, myth . . . and I'll add a reliable optic - perhaps something like, BBBS!! Whoa - can I say that ?!?;)RG

Seating, right? BBBS? :D

BTW: I'm not opposed to buying custom bullets, just need to know what to order for 100 yd score in 30BR.

Also barrel type. 4 groove, 5R, 6 and also length/contour?

Any suggestions are welcome.

My oblique play on optic, as in scope - thought the last two letters might be a good phishing lure.:po_O

Regarding barrels & bullets: take your pic there are many good barrel and bullet makers. Select the 'correct' twist rate (minimum Sg1.4) for the bullet you intend to shoot, or, better yet, a twist which imparts a gyroscopic SAFETY NET, and your "hummer" ratio will improve - dramatically: the gurus like Sg1.5 - and I've learned why!;) Especially with BR quality bullets, the notion that, an inch, 'too fast' of twist rate will measurably increase group size IS a myth . . . BR quality bullet will have close to ZERO center-of-gravity off-set.:D

Always worth repeating in a 30BR barrel twist-rate discussion: the default 1:17" twist, for the short/light 30 Cal. hand swaged bullets (110-118gr), based upon the 0.925" & 1.00" jacket lengths, produces respective Sg of 1.9 & 1.7 - there is nothing SLOW about THAT!;)

As do most serious bench-rest competitors, I have my favorite barrel makers, twist(s), land/groove configuration(s), and contours. I'm very prejudicial regarding what bullet brand I shoot.;) I have a penchant for 5-groove - both PacNor (button rifled), and Bartlein (cut rifled) barrels: both have produced more than one NBRSA National Champion plaque for me.:) RG

P.S. Regarding barrel contour/length: for VfS (13.5 Lb.),or, heavier weight limit, I go with the traditional Heavy Varmint taper, and use all of the [1.250" Dia.] cylinder I can. Length, except for balance is relatively unimportant - I would not go over 24". Most barrels will shoot best around 3020-3050fps: there is usually a very good node at about 2970-2990 fps. Comparing 21" and 24" barrels during the same chronograph session, with the same components, the difference is usually 19-21 fps, or, about 7 fps per inch . . . there could be that difference between two barrels.

Thanks, appreciate all the good information you provide. I have one last question. What are typical velocities in 30BR competition?
You must have missed this:

Good luck in your quest!

So to bring this thread to life again, I am wondering besides making up my own drawing with the suggested changes that RR talked about, does anyone have a reamer print that they have with these Changes? Possibly a print number so I can order one?

I figure if I am going to put one together better do it as close to right as possible.

you can email to cyanchyc@mymts.net or text to 1-204-570-1956

thanks in advance
