I am disgusted with one person making an insane judgement on an innocent person and carrying out his maniacal plan to murder people for no known reason. My heart goes out to the family of rep giffords family.I may disagree with her politics at times because I am a conservative, however this just makes me sick. There are several people dead and wounded and rep gifford lays in a hospital bed near death. My prayers go out to all the families involved .I hope all my brothers and sisters will pray for the afflicted people in this event. We can be sure that the gun media will slay us now.It is the saddest event in this new year.Let us hope they will lock him up forever.

I agree, Jon. What I keep wondering is how so many of these nut cases, and simple criminal cases, escape scrutiny of the authorities. IMO, this guy should not have been able to legally buy a gun from a dealer. Same goes for a number of other murders that I read about all too regularly. There are plenty screening methods in place, but the authorities don't seem to make good use of them.

Thanks to another nutjob it will make our beloved sport and interests more difficult in the future!!!! Just wait for the NEW hi-cap mag bans introduced again etc.

It will all be for the children. What I find somewhat disturbing is that killing a Congressman or woman carries other penalties over a peon citizen. Makes me kinda warm and fuzzy to know that 'we the people' have a lesser standard of importance as far as murder/dieing goes!!!

Prayers to the families of those murdered and wounded.

Respectfully,
Dennis

Unfortunately, there are insane people that have no prior, serious criminal records. It is very difficult to find all of them and I don't think that we would want to live under a system that could. Some deaths are preventable and some are not.

In 2008, 13,846 Americans died in alcohol-related traffic incidents. 3,434 were here in California. When these preventable, pointless deaths occur, very few people blame alcohol or vehicles as the cause. It is the drunk who is blamed. When a murderer uses a firearm, there is a subculture of people that blame firearms and firearms owners for the tragedy.

Sleepy you are right on,it is never a humans fault period.I wish once the libs would reveal that they to realize this as the root cause. You dont see the libs trying to ban alcohol as that is their hobby on taxpayers dime. We had a democrat who pushed for exceptionally tough alcohol and driving laws and after it was signed into law she had just left a legislature cocktail party and got caught by her own law.She was twice the legal bloodlevel limit .When she was interviewed later she played it down and didnt see how it pertained to her case. She got a slap on the wrist and re-elected the same year.LOL Isnt that silly.

A tragedy? Yes. Senseless? Maybe to us, but not to the guy who did this. I have heard more than a few times that what this country needs is someone to "clean out " The politicians" that keep making the mess this country is in.. The really sad thing is that people were killed and injured by this guy. And that gun owners will take the heat once again.

Another terrible gun related tragedy, similar to the incident at Virginia Tech about 3 years ago, Colombine, and others. These actions give the antis ammunition for more anti gun laws.

What bothers me is that when these individuals applied for a gun and submitted to the background checks, did the dealers sense that maybe he was not "all there"? I think dealers should be given some latitude to refuse a sale. The very first time an individual experiences obvious mental problems, someone should order a medical exam and if he fails it, this should go on his record.

My prayers go out to the families of the victims of this terrible tragedy.

The Brady campaign didn't waste any time on exploiting the incident to further their cause:

Tucson Shooting Shows We Make It Too Easy for Dangerous and Irresponsible People to Get Guns

Dear Wayne,

Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the people, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, touched directly by the shootings in Tucson Saturday.

The Congresswoman and I have met and discussed gun issues in the past. All of us are deeply saddened and angered by this tragedy. It is unacceptable that Americans of all backgrounds, as well as our elected leaders and their constituents, are constantly at risk from gun violence when assembling in public places.

The 22 year-old shooter in Tucson was not allowed to enlist in the military, was asked to leave school, and was considered "very disturbed" (according to former classmates), but that's not enough to keep someone from legally buying as many guns as they want in America.

People find this surprising, but, sadly, it's true, and we ought to be angry about it.

The troubles of the Tucson shooter are more proof that we make it too easy for dangerous and irresponsible people to get guns in this country. We have too few laws to protect our families and communities from this kind of bloodshed, and the laws we do have are riddled with too many loopholes. Arizona, as it turns out, has almost no gun laws.

Please support the Brady Campaign and help defeat the gun extremists who want to arm everyone in every place and every situation.

Sincerely,

Paul Helmke, President
Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence

Now, before somebody asks - I'm signed up on the Brady site to receive their BS emails because it's good surveillance. That email went out yesterday afternoon. Like I said, no time wasted.

Funny you dont hear much about this.......

You can look in your driveway and see something that kills more people than firearms do. You likely have something in your fridge or cabinet that does as well. There are things surrounding you that people die from every day, or their deaths can be related to, but you will never see a major campaign against any of it. Cigarettes are far more dangerous than firearms, and you don't need any background check to buy those, or alcohol either.

When you put it in perspective, firearm related deaths are rare. You can literally look around your house or the supermarket and see more items that kill people more often than firearms do.

I wonder why he was not allowed to join the military and kicked out of school?

I think we have too many gun laws. Especially the "short barreled rifle" or "long barreled pistol" and even suppressor laws. But the one most important law that needs to be inforced is not being enforced.

Just like the case of the Virginia college shooting, if i remember right he was in and out of psychiatric hospitals all his life but still legally bought a handgun. Why was his mental status not reported much earlier to the ATF "or whoever" and a red flag raised, isn't this the point of calling in a gun sale anyway? Even if someone was just so depressed that they needed medical help, they should be put on ALERT forever. But instead they say nothing and give them meds that makes them ZOMBIES and turn them loose!

All too true.

My take on all this is it's mostly the fault of the news media & their insatiable hunger for ratings share. Prior posts point out the daily death toll caused by human inattention or plain irresponsible behavior, but often the products misused (motor vehicles, alcohol, tobacco, cell phones, etc.) are widely available and popular while at the same time their manufacturers spend significant advertising dollars promoting their use. Those dollars go right into the pockets of the same media companies that put every shooting out there for the world to see.

I'm really surprised that Senator Dick Durbin (from my state, unfortunately) actually came out & said: "“We live in a world of violent images and violent words, but those of us in public life and the journalists who cover us, should be thoughtful in response to this and try to bring down the rhetoric, which I’m afraid has become pervasive in our discussion of political issues."

Of course he then went on to insinuate that Sarah Palin's rhetoric some how contributed to the tragedy in Tucson, IMHO is completely unacceptable and totally without merit.

If the media weren't so insatiable in their need to capture market share to justify their existence - they survive and thrive on advertising revenue - our society would be far better off in many ways than just where it comes to firearms.

My prayers go out to the families of those involved... on both sides of the tragedy.

I can't agree with that. With all the mental disorders, a short-term stint of depression shouldn't bar somebody for life from being able to practice their Second Amendment rights. If that were the case they might as well take away freedom of speech and freedom of religion as well - those two rights have killed a hell of a lot more people than firearms. Somebody diagnosed with depression by a prescription-toting doctor when they were ten years old should not be a determining factor of if somebody should be robbed of their Constitutional rights for life. That's ludicrous not to mention one hell of a slippery slope.

Crazy people do crazy shit and these things happen. If it wasn't done with a knife it could have been done with any number of other weapons whether it be with an edge weapon, fire extinguisher beatings or mass homicide by Buick. Knee-jerk legislative reactions based on emotions are the reason we're in the place we are now.

Wayne

ETA: Spclark, I couldn't agree more with your post. Notice how the media can't talk about this story without trying to tug at the heart strings of the viewer every few minutes by mentioning the 9 year old that was killed. A child, a judge and a congress woman - a perfect storm for the 24-hour cable news mass media to sensationalize.

Re: The senseless tragedy in Arizona

How many people through the years knew or suspected this guy was disturbed? Certainly, his folks, maybe teachers, friends, and relatives. But, no one says anything. No one does anything about locking this kid up for a mental evaluation. There is a lot of fault to be spread around among those people.....

Looking at Mr. Loughner's rather extensive record of aberrant behavior, he's been a walking accident-waiting-to-happen for quite some time.

As Arizona is one of the few "shall issue" states that also permit firearm owners to carry a gun concealed without a permit, I have to wonder how things might have been different had there been someone so inclined in the audience when this tragedy began who then chose to take positive action.

I agree with you 100%. These type of things that people do are what the media thrives on for gun control. ! thing is that fellow does not deserve to live his days out in prison and we all pay for it. It is time to fire up old sparky without delay. Their needs to be no trial.

I had the same question years ago when I maintained a dealers permit: when I called and spoke to the ATF agent I was told I could refuse a sale and be safe to do so under the law if it was not over race or creed.
I believe I read in one of the news wires that this delusional and obviously ill young man was refused by a Wall Mart a sale of ammunition. Enough of us are also, in my humble opinion, not reporting people we come across in our own lives that display mental problems that have and maintain access to the tools we posses for defense and sporting purposes, and we all cherish and respect so dearly.

Yes, it is a tragedy. One of the guys that held the a##hole down was a carry permit holder and was carrying that day. I saw him in an interview this morning. he came out of the store after they were fighting him down. good job on the lady stepping in too to take away the gun. those folks saved more lives. very brave. I wish someone out there would have stopped it sooner.

An e-mail I got this afternoon reports that one of those involved in subduing the assailant was carrying Saturday. He apparently mentioned this in interviews with CNN and Fox News.

It took CCKRBA to get this news to me.

I had to do a search on his name to confirm this report and it's NOT on CNN:
