The new a17 or should i just go with bolt action

Hi all just wanted to get your opinion on what to get. I am looking to jump on the 17 hmr band wagon. I have been eyeing the cz 455 varmint. Then savage comes out with the a17. I don't know if anyone has heard of there new rifle but its a semi auto 17 hmr with delayed blowback. Was wondering if anyone had the volquartsen in the 17 and what their thoughts are on the semi auto vs bolt action 17s.

I've shot Savage bolt action and have two friends that own them. They're OK but not in the same league as CZ or Anschutz. One of those buds converted a Ruger autoloader to 17HMR. It works half the time, a jammer's delight. The 455s have had mixed reviews. I'd say the best CZ 17hmr is the discontinued 453 varminter with single set trigger. Find a used one and you've got what was once their top of the line. If you have the budget, go with an Anschutz sporter or MPR version. I own the 453, the Annies in both styles and an Annie 17P pistol. At 100 yds. the pistol will keep up with all the others. Be prepared to buy all the different types of ammo to see what your gun prefers. Regarding the new autoloader, initially it looks like you are restricted to one manufacturer and type of ammo. For my money, I'd let the early adopters get the bugs out and prove its accuracy and reliability before purchasing one. I have no experience or knowledge on the Volquartsens.

Something to consider is the ease of proper and thorough cleaning as well. The 17 rimfires are copper projectiles vs. just lead for the 22 rimfires. And as such, copper left from the 17s is much more challenging to clean from the bore.

That being stated, cleaning a bolt action rifle is much easier than most of the repeater actions; especially with the 17 caliber bores. Therefore, keep this in mind when making your decision.
