The Best Scope

Im Looking into buying a new hunting scope. would prefer something with no greater power than 12x. I need something that will hold zero with confidence. good glass, standard duplex reticle, do not want AO or side focus. must have standard turrets. dont care if it has fast focus eye peice or not. Budget is around $800 or less...whats ur opinions?

When the chips are down Leupold has never failed me. I own half a dozen from 2-7 power to 6.5-20 with zero problems. Most were purchased used since their life time warrantee actually means something. They track well and the glass is good enough to read mirage and judge antlers at any reasonable hunting range.
That being said Nikon Monarch is a great scope as well.

When you eliminate side focus & AO, you're really limiting your choices. There are a lot of really goods scopes on the market with good glass. A whole lot more choices than even 10 years ago. Pentax Lightseeker, Burris Black Diamond, Weaver Super Slam are a few.

Do not buy the cheap line of Luepold. Get a VX-3 or better, I have had very good luck and still use the old Vari-XII's. Leupold has some cheap scopes that are only fair as far as optics goes. I hunt with Leupold scopes. I'm headed to Colorado this fall to hunt moose and will be using Leupold, this is a once in lifetime hunt. I drew 1 of the 8 non-resident tags.

I really love all my Leupold. And the workers here in Oregon shure are glad to have a job!! It's a win win.

Leupold V3, 4x14 would be an excellent choice and it comes with the standard duplex, my favorite hunting recticle. It's about the same size as their 4x12 and fits very nicely on a hunting rifle. I have three of them and highly recommend them. I would get it with the Adjustable Objective so you can adjust for parallax.

thnx k22 but thats why im staying away from AO...I have found that in my normal hunting situations, having to adjust the objective is more of a hinderance than a help...Its not uncommon for me to get shots on coyotes at 7-10yrds. running and then may have one at 200yrds. I have had several scopes over the years with AO and i love them for shooting paper or working up loads but in a standard hunting situation it doesnt work for me...truthfully probly 95% of my shots on coyotes are around 60-80yrds.

My Weaver 3X10 Grand Slam stands up to full power 300 WSM rounds and has never given me anything but satisfaction.

Non adjustable objective just means that parallax is set at a fixed distance. Usually 100 yards in the scopes you are looking at. You could as easily set an AO at 100 and get the same result but with flexibility to adjust, situation permitting. The cost is added complexity, weight, cost, etc.

I like a fixed objective in my 3x9.big game scopes. They are hard to beat, all around.

I have a vintage Redfield that has the best glass ever. For new purchase, I would go Leupold.

I run a Leupold on my coyote rifle. At times it gets daily use, in the truck, on the horse, ATV, or just carried for miles... All weather. It holds a zero even with the worst of treatment. The other nice thing with Leupold, is if you don't like the crosshair, or change your mind on the turrets, the costom shop can normally change what you have to what you want. Right now I am running a VX 3 4.5 - 14, but my shots run a little longer than most of yours. I don't own one yet, but I kind of like the looks of the new VX-6 with an adjustment range of 2X-12X, seems like that might be optimum for a coyote rifle. I had one inside 5 yards the other day and had to sight down the side of the barrel and just pull the trigger as he was a blur at 4.5X . I got him, but at 2X I bet I could have actually used the crosshairs.

I agree, at those distances and AO is not necessary, in fact, a 3 x 9 may be all you need.

For what you're doing, I'd recommend a 2 x 7 or 2.5 x 8 Leupold. Big field of view, non-critical eye relief, light weight, mostly American made and a great warranty. 2nd choice for me would be one of the Nikons in the same power range, at 1/2 the cost.

My go-to rifle is a homemade .340 with a 4.5 x 14 x 50 VX-III with the B & C reticle. Not exactly a coyote gun, but in a pinch........Helluva hog gun though until they run.

I just got a 8 x 42 x 56 NF to mount for a friend. First NF I've ever been able to handle, and underneath it says Made in Japan. I was surprised.

I have been shooting Leupold scopes for 40 years with nary a problem but I am in the process of switching out to Zeiss. The Zeiss 4.5x14 sits on my Varmint Rifles and a few super fast hunting calibers but the 3x9 Zeiss is now on my go to hunting rifles for big game. Anything over 9x really needs an adjustment for parallax in my opinion but I shoot target at 14x and then usually carry my scopes at 6x for hunting. The Zeiss optics are superior in all my scopes to both the VX-3 Leupolds I still have and the Mark 4 that I got rid of in favor of a 6.5x20 Zeiss for my 6x47 Lapua. My 2 cents. Tom
