The Bane of the Flier

Yesterday was great day to shoot so I went out and tried some new loads for my MATEN 6.5x47 Lapua. Out of the 4 loads tested 2 looked like keepers, however the pesky fliers showed up and took away what could have been a fantastic group. What I find interesting is that with the #3 load the flier was to the right and with the 8 shot #4 load there was 2 fliers to the left. All in all not bad for a gas gun. Now if I can only repeat the #3 group............

If it's happening on the last shot by chance, drop your mag before you pull the trigger on the last round. I've noticed it makes a difference sometimes.

I like to shoot at least three times at the range to test loads that appear to be good. I like to test at 600 yds better than shorter range (same range) if I'm shooting my F-class rifle. my PPC gets shot at 100 and 200 yds. Fliers can be caused from slight changes in shooting position or bag set-up.

Bill,

A gas gun is harder to hold still than a flat bottom benchgun. Like Wapiti25 said, the fliers cound be coming for gun handling, or your set up. If the gun does not recoil the same every time, you will see fliers. I can shoot a round bottom stock gun better off bi-pods, than a rest.
