I let the word get out about this case over on the "Show Off Your BAT" thread & I have been getting requests for more information ever since.
This case design all came about several years ago in an effort to create a better 6.5 case than the 6.5-284. I gave up, realizing that there was not enough capacity and necked the drawing down to 243 caliber to try the 115 & 117 gr bullets and had a reamer made.
I shot well with the 243 Cutright winning a big portion of my long range marksman points with it and captured the IBS 1000yd Heavy Gun Overall Champion trophy at Quantico back in 2007.
I had been thinking about necking this case up to other calibers and I have been wanting to shoot a 30 cal rifle at 600yd to try & buck the 6mm trend so when Lapua made the 308 Win Palma brass available I decided it was about time to do something.
The capacity is the same as the 308 Win but with the neck being longer I get more neck tension on the bullet & with the improved shoulder angle & less taper in the case I get an efficient powder burn plus a case that's easy to resize.
The neck is .300 long with a .341 neck diameter for a no turn set-up & the shoulder angle is 37 degree's 30 minutes. This is the first time I have ever used a "no turn" chamber design on anything that is to be used for BR, it has made things easy and there is no donut developing after being fired & resized 4 times.
My first tests were done with a Benchmark barrel, button rifled with 3 grooves in a 1-14" pitch, with a .300 bore and a .308 groove.
So far I have tried all the popular powders in the Re15/Varget burn rate and most of the popular 155gr bullets with the new Sierra 155gr Palma printing the smallest group with Varget powder at 2950FPS. All of the loads tested at long range (IMR 4320, Re15 & Varget) with (155gr BIB's, Sierra's & Berger's) have all agged under 2.5" at 600 yd, not bad, but never a group measured under 2".
I am sending my reamer in for a slight change of the freebore and overall chamber length and will set my barrel back to resume testing again soon with the Sierra's and some Scenars I picked up over the winter.
Here's a picture of the 308 Cutright next to a 308 Winchester.
