In early 1980 I was on a NATO deployment to Northern Europe. After the military exercise we went on liberty, port of call La Coruna España. Light skinned, blue and green eyed girls speaking Castilian Spanish, I was in heaven but that's another story.
Anyhoo I was made the liaison with the Guardia Civil since I spoke Spanish. Rode around with one of their officers and checked in with a couple of stations they had around town. They showed me around and I noticed cases of 9mm stacked floor to ceiling in a lot of the rooms. I was curious at first until I remembered the problems they were having with Basque separatists. I figured they stocked up just in case they were laid siege to by bad guys. I kept thinking how do I get my hands on some of that 9! Never had a good plan plus it would have been contraband on the ship.
So here I am many years remembering that it was a lot (a lot) of 9mm! Wonder how much that would be worth today?
