Texas girl goes to New Zealand

It's always been a "thing" that one US hunter claimed a "record" for handgun hunting in NZ, which is totally illegal under NZ law.

Whether this was just BS or he did bring a pistol into NZ illegally, or even borrow one here, who knows?
Was his last name "Keith?"
He was always going around braggin about he could shoot a "Hart" at 400 yds with his dang pistol.

I don’t recall this thread being titled “Looking for Judgement and Your Personal Bias”. I have no doubt that this woman in her late 60’s would have preferred to strap on a pack wonder through mountain passes for weeks living off the land while searching for a wild trophy buck…. Would you be happy for her then or also insist that she solo sail from US to NZ???

When I was younger I would spend 4-6 hours every morning on Thanksgiving and Christmas to fry a dozen turkeys for friends and family. I’d be exhausted, but everyone was grateful for the delicious turkey(s), except my Dad. He would pronounce to everyone that the turkey was “too moist” as he continued to eat it. Now keep in mind sitting right beside my turkey was my mother’s extremely dry oven baked bird. After about 20 years of this I hit my limit of his unnecessary, unwanted, selfish, irrelevant opinions. As he started to climb up on his soap box in the middle of a full room I simply removed the plate from his hand and informed him that no one cared for his thoughts and from now on he was only allowed to have mom’s dry turkey or honey baked ham. This made holidays for next +15 years go so much better. There is a life lesson.

With the exception of hunting public land, most domestic hunters have some form of a canned hunt. If you are planting crop or hunting over it or using a deer feeder then you are enhancing your game. Granted maybe not to the degree of selective breeding and stocking game, but it’s not totally pure chance unless you hunt public land that isn’t backed against a game preserve fence…

Sorry - I signed on to see a light read while having my morning coffee. I was a bit taken back by some of the unnecessary commentary so I thought I would add mine since you ruined my morning vibe… coffee now taste bad and is cold.

We're obviously tourist hunters if non-resident, and particularly if we're paying for the privilege.

The animals shot on "hunting preserves" here are high dollar and the clientele almost exclusively foreign. I know a deer breeder who sells to these outfits and the top animals cost an arm and a leg to shoot.

You may not understand this but NZ has always been open season with free access to public land. Deer are officially a pest and there's no bag limits. Only a special wapiti herd in Fiordland is an exception to this and it's balloted.
The same applies in OZstralia and locally they are is such "Feral Pest" quantities that we are allowed to spotlight them... If only I had access to a "Can" like you in NZ I might try a shot on the ones coming out of the swamp across the road and leaving deep tracks & droppings all over the lawn as they come into to graze, especially if you have roses but the Baaaaaaaastards are even going after my citrus! Just don't want the neighbors up in arms and a knock on the door from the local constabulary...
Once the bottom fell out of the velvet and antler powder market a lot of farmers just opened the gates and let them go..... We DO have those captive/private reserves that cost $$$ but I am only interested in filling the freezer and a big buck is not nearly as tasty as a yearling or young doe. In fact taking out the does helps keep the population from exploding any more than already is the case; I think in 20 years there won't be any place, aside from perhaps the Simpson Dessert and the internal regions that do not have deer locally.
No native predators mean that just like pigs the deer are exploding in population.
BTW: You can Big Game hunt here in OZ as we have in addition to the usual pigs & deer, Camels, Water Buffalo, donkeys & horses... All Feral Pests.

A cold Lion Brown would be a good one to have after a successful hunt…

New Zealand is one of the few places I’d enjoy going back to.

Why even comment on the post? Sad life man, hope you find happiness one day.
