Tim Claunch has chambered up a few barrels now for me for my 40x LG and my Bat M HG The LG currently sports a new HV Brux 8 Twist 6 BR and the Bat action has a 1.250 Straight Brux 8 Twist chambered in the 6 Dasher.
Id been trying to get the BIB 104's working in the 6 BR with no luck and I decided to give the 108 Berger a try while testing the BIB's yesterday. So I setup a dummy round and loaded up 5 just kissing the lands. After my testing of the BIBs at 300 yards I proceeded to a blank piece of Paper with a thumb tack placed in it to aim at and put 5 rounds down range in under 5/8" group. I thought ok its time to go back and see what I can squeeze out of the Bergers.
I loaded 5 sets of 5 to test at 300 yards starting at + .010, + .005, 0 and
-.005 and -.010 from the lands. Testing the BIBs I found that 30.5 grains of Varget shot the best so I used that load with a F205m primer.
All Groups shot under 1" at 300 but this one seated at "0" shot an outstanding group.
Now onto the 6 Dasher
I fire formed loads using 30.0 grains of Varget which left a case partially formed so on the second firing I loaded up 32.0 Grains of Varget and finished the cases off with a nice sharp shoulder. this rifle is showing some true promise in the fire form stages as the 30.0 grains were tearing one ragged hole at 100 yards and the second firing was stacking them into a really nice wad.
Here are a couple of the second firing test targets.
1st 3 shot group 2nd firing
2nd 3 shot group 2nd firing.
So yesterday morning after got enough 2nd fired brass shot, I loaded test loads of 31.8, 32.0, 32.2, 32.4, and 32.6 grains of Varget and tested them at 300 yards. The 32.2 grains showed the most promise then the 32.6 grains showed promise as well but I decided to go with 32.2 as the group size edged out the 32.6 grains.
That evening I went back to the range and tested again at 300 yards this time with different seating depths. I don't recall the exact numbers as I normally measure the length of my seating stem. A rough estimate is +.010, +.005, 0 -.005 and -.010 again rough estimates but close.
All the groups but 1 was hovering around 1" but this one stood out and this is what I'll be working with. The groups shot for final seating depth was only 4 shots as I allowed in my mind some lead way due to the slight wind conditions as well and if I had a stray shot I could read the other 3 for some sort of pattern. in saying that groups 1&2 seated at +.010 and +.005 had 3 shots that were under 1/2" but that forth one got me.
Now group #5 at roughly -.010 from the lands provided this nice tiny group.
Again only 4 shots but I think I may have something on this load and seating depth. Also to Note Tim said this is one of the straightest barrels he has ever chambered.
load is 32.2 grains Berger 108 BT with a F205m primer. Shot at 300 Yards
