Testing Alliant Reloder 15.5 (15 point FIVE)

quest450

Mark Niezabitowski
got 4lb of RL 15.5 recently and I wanna test it in my Dasher
I'm looking for safe starting load and can't find any info on Alliant's website
32.0 grains seems to be safe charge to start based on RL15, RL16, Varget 3and H4350 in my rifle

RL 15 - 32.8gr/2949 fps
RL 16 - 34.7gr/2948 fps
H4350 - 35.5gr/2966 fps
Varget - 32.5gr/3000fps

28" Krieger, CCI BR4, Roy's 103 jammed 0.010"

It seems to me that if Alliant is going to release this powder, they should have some collateral backup in place. Since they haven't updated their web page for reloading data, I suggest calling them to get their data:

For phone inquiries, an Alliant Powder representative will be available to answer your calls between 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. CT Monday through Friday (866) 286-7436.

ADDED:

There is a member here who can probably add some light to your questions:

Good Luck with your project!

Contact Praveen on this site. He tested Reloder 15.5 for us.

Q: Where did you get it? We haven't seen it on most websites yet. Our tests show it is very good in all respects -- temp stability, accuracy, ES/SD.

you can read Praveen’s report here in the bulletin. He tested 15.5 with his dasher and performed a powder ladder.

15.5 was available at PV on 9/3/21 (limit 4 1-pounders).

If there's data available for that powder for any case of the same volume you should be safe reducing to a medium load from that case data.

I had to do this for a 500 grain load in a 450 Marlin, I used published data for the 458 x 2", which has identical volume, then referencing 500 grain loads for the Siamese Mauser version of the 45-70 which is also a very similar volume to the 450 Marlin.

Thanks Kurz, I did contact them thru Alliant's website the other day but haven't heard back yet
quest450 et al,
We won't be publishing any 6 Dasher data I am afraid, because we don't have pressure testing capability as it isn't a SAAMI standardized cartridge.
We do have quickload inputs for the new TS 15.5, and have developed a decent amount of other loads that you can use to develop your load. The powder is slower burning than Reloder(R) 15 and Varget, so I might look at those charges as starting points for TS 15.5 load development.
Good luck, and I look forward to seeing your results.
Shoot well,
Paul

RL 15.5 ladder test, starting load 32.00gr, #10 33.80gr in .2gr increments, no pressure signs with 33.80gr 3090fps, second test was shot a bit later and the mirage was already kicking in

I snagged a lb from PV yesterday, and one lb was all I could
click on Pretty dang pricy for one lb considering Hazmat, shipping
and tax. $67 buck's. At least I have some to validate before an
eight lb buy..

Your test mimicked what I found when testing & shooting this powder. 32.8 since Match 4 at Williamsport both LG & HG, haven't re-tuned it since I wanted to see how it handled weather change. It is starting to show more vertical now so I will retest it & expect it to come in around 33.0. I'm sure you already noticed the extra speed over RL15 with the same charge.

Has anyone watching this thread ran this in 5.56 with 75-77gr mag loaded bullets? I assume it will be compressed, however M995s comment has me wondering is a slightly reduced charge as compared to RL15 may get similar MV and performance?

Tag, i was just thinking the same thing.

Tested it at 24.0 grains and Berger 80.5's with my service rifle (20" barrel, 4.5x scope) slung up at 300 yards on the NRA MR-63 target. Very happy with the results. Had 4 shots left that I chronographed with my magnetospeed at 2687 fps avg, 18 SD.

I loaded some 80 ELDs tonight over 25.0. Very little compression with judicious settling/tapping. 1.996 cbto and right at the lands. This should be as fast as I can push an 80 in my cbi tube. I’d expect about 2850fps

What's your barrel length? I've seen 80's pushed to almost 3000 in a 26" gas gun with this powder.
