Teaching somebody to chamber a barrel

Hey everybody,

One of my first posts here but I’ve been lurking for a while. I’m a 21 year old engineering student at the university of Alabama. I’ve always done my own gun work if it was within my abilities, but I am putting a new barrel on my tikka and would like to learn how to use a lathe and how to chamber a barrel. Is there anybody in Alabama that would be generous enough to help a young guy out and teach me something I really want to learn. I appreciate any replies. Thanks.

tO DO IT RIGHT IT'LL TAKE SOME TIME.
I completely understand that, that is why I would like to learn from somebody that understands the process already. I would go to the machine shop they have on campus but it’s against the “rules” to do anything firearm related.

Sounds like the "rules" have no regard for your rights or the constitution. Speak up don't be silent. The u of a receives tax dollars both state and federal.

Easier said than done, liberalism rules the campus. It’s rare to find anyone within the faculty at UA that is willing to help with anything controversial unless it fits the social agenda. Currently anything gun related on campus will most likely get you expelled.

Sir, If you are serious you will peruse material like this.
I am serious however, I have to find time between school and work. And at the end of the day I have prioritize what is most important to me and since this is just a hobby I very much enjoy sometimes it has to take the back burner to other things. But I will read it.

I’m from Tuscaloosa, I got tired of Alabama football real quick. There’s more important things than college football so you won’t hear roll tide from me.
That's an hour an 18 minutes to a world class smith and action maker is nothing more than a hill and a holler. I'm from Ky, so don't think I'm being fecitious....even if I am a flatlander to the eastern ky guys.
You have a wealth of knowledge nearby, relatively speaking. I'm not sure if you'll get a closer to you answer.
If so...great! If not, you weren't serious enough to begin with, so suck it up and understand that this is a very small market. You either move to it or it moves on without you. This is life after college.

Here's a a link to his website. I won't go as far as recommending you to him...but I could.

Tbaxl go to the machine shop at the university that you mentioned above if you can. You dont have to do "gun stuff". Learn how to operate a lathe, basic tasks like drilling, reaming, turning, threading and boring. there really is no shortcut around learning how to run the lathe. Read through the thread Butch posted. Once you have done that you can practice the techniques on scrap metal and find a mentor to walk you through a chamber job. I have traveled the road you are about to embark on.I had some help from lots of people along the way.The shooting community is full of great people that are willing share the knowledge and experience the have acquired.
Best of luck to you

I'll try they are just pretty strict on who uses it. seems like a waste of funds to me if they don't want to teach how to use a lathe to a student who wants to learn.

I know alan will talk your ear off about chambering- i learned a ton from him back when he was into centerfire but i dont think hes chambered a barrel much less a centerfire barrel since he got james messer about 25yrs ago.
