Tasco Boresighter ????

I have a Tasco boresighter ? I have had this for a few years and it is pretty accurate. Gets me on the paper at 100 every time. My question is about sticking the round metal rod in the muzzle. Is this a good or bad thing for a barrel. I have a new gun (Rem 700 CDL) and im still waiting on my new scope to come in from the Leupold custom shop. I wanted to get opinions on whether or not this type of boresighter can damage a barrel.

That is a great question from a gunsmiths point of view and knowing of tasco boresighter . No i would not want to put it in any of my rifles nor any of my customers guns . We take so much care not to jam cleaning rods or any foreign objects down the muzzle end of the barrel. it just does not make sense to put metal boresighter pins down the bore . But then i don't have to tell you that. The fact that you posted this question when you think about it, you knew the answer . www.therifler.com

The overly simple answer is that yes you can damage a barrel/muzzle crown incorrectly using the spuds of a typical optical "boresighter".

With just a little care to properly select the right spud size, correctly/carefully insert the spud and correctly/carefully remove the spud you will not damage the barrel or muzzle crown.

I have used optical collimators (boresighters) with both spuds and expansion arbors to do over 1200 firearms and have not yet damaged a barrel. Treat both the spud and and barrel as precision instruments and you will have no trouble.

In my 59 years of shooting I've learned that the biggest cause of barrel muzzle/crown damage is from cleaning rods, brushes, and jags being improperly used. You will be cleaning your barrel far more times than you will be using a boresighter spud.
