Tasco 6-24x42mm Varmint Riflescope

Hello,
What do you think of the Tasco 6-24x42mm Varmint Rilescope? I'm thinking about getting one for my Savage .17 HMR to try some long distance shooting.

Thanks!
Siiri

For what you are going to pay for that junk, you can get yourself a good set of rings, or about 8 pounds of good coffee beans. No offense, but you asked.

Wrote an article couple years ago for Varmint Hunter magazine. On my Marlin 17HMR I have a Tasco 2 1/2 to 10 mil-dot. Wonderful choice for the little 17. Wrote about drops and showed groundhog kills over 250 yards. E-mail me and I will dig out a computer copy to send if you can't find it through Varmint Hunter.

You do not need to "waste" enough money on a scope to buy a decent used car. For most hunting you sight-in the scope and NEVER change the adjustments. Who cares if it "shoots the box" or is "repeatable"?

As for edge clarity, resolution, brightness etc...Look through the scope. Can you see? See the reticle?
SHOOT.

Now enjoy the shot and save the money from not buying that fancy, simple, obscenely-overpriced scope for the car to get you there.

Have you ever actually used that specific scope? I have had one for a few years now, it started out on my .17HMR and now resides on my .222, though I have a 36x Weaver to swap on it in the near future. Mine holds zero and tracks decent, it's also reasonably clear and focuses well. I see no issue with it, especially for the price they ask for it. I am sure a few lemons make it through the doors, but that's to be expected for a low priced, high magnification optic. I have no issue making hits out to 300yds, which is as far as I normally shoot. I can see clearly much farther, so if I wanted to stretch it out more the scope would be able to handle it no problem.

I have tried many of the other low budget, high power scopes available, and I feel the Tasco's are some of the better available. I have a 6-24x42mm Varminter and a 10-40x50mm Target model. They are both nice optics for the money. I will openly admit they won't compare to a NF or Leupold, and even Weaver will probably be a bit nicer. But when you are putting it on something that doesn't necessitate a $1200 optic, it will be just fine.

I don't have the money to put a $1200 optic on every rifle I own. It's just not practical for some people, myself included. I use what I can afford, and I seem to do pretty well with the low end stuff I use on my rifles. My Remington 740 has a $25 used Bushnell 3-9x40 on it, yet it has killed more deer than I can recall and some a good distance away.

All I am trying to say is you don't need to spend a ton of money on every optic you purchase. It's possible to avoid spending a small fortune yet still see the target or animal and hit it as well.

If you like the looks of the scope, It's not all beat up, the glass is clear and the price is right, go for it and don't worry about what anybody else says or thinks. It's your $$ so go for it.
The first time you drop your rifle, (and it "will" happen sooner or later) and you damage your scope, you'll be glad it wasn't a BIG $$$$ scope that got hurt!
Because you spent $1,500.00 to $2,000.00 for a scope, that doesn't make you a better shooter.
You have to crawl before you can walk. JMHO, Mike.

The original poster asked for "thoughts" about this scope. He mentioned nothing about a budget. Why pay that much money for a Savage in such a cool caliber, then top it off with a low budget scope? He didn't say he couldn't afford a better scope. As is usually the case with optics, you get what you pay for. As I stated previously, no offense intended.

I have used Tasco, Bushnell, Burris and Sightron. From my experience Tasco is adequate for hunting. They do fine if you do not need to crank the turrets up and down a lot. I currently shoot a 1,000.00 Sightron on my custom 6 BR that does not hold focus as well as the Tasco's I have used.

I have shot a couple of tasco 6-24 varmints in competition and ground hog hunting turning the turrets from 100 yd zero to 600 yd zero which is where the turrets stopped turning they tracked perfect.

Hey I'm a girl.

I knew that but I figured I'd wait till you told them. ;)
Looks like the scope isn't a top priority as of now.
Get that rifle squared away first and let us know what happens, Mike.

Anyone can give thier experiences on scopes..Top to Bottom..I have had Ultras, NXS, Sightron III, Vari-X III, Tasco, Burris Black Diamond, Burris Signature and few others along they way...

BUt I can tell you the neg here about Tasco are the post Japan days! because the Japanese Tascos were first rate solid glass etc... I have had the Titan, Euro, Target, etc... I still have a 6-18 target adj obj on my 17...The Japanese glass has great resolution...
