Target Scope Exit Pupil

I am looking at getting a Weaver T36 or SS 20X fixed and I note the objective lens is only 42 with the Weaver and 40 with the SWFA SS. I thought exit pupil was a function of the size of the objective lens divided by the power rating, which would give each of these an exit size of only 2 for the SS and just a little more than 1 for the Weaver.

I have never had the opportunity to look through either and, in fact, have never used a scope with more than 20X and that one had a large objective.

How are these scopes, and particularly the Weaver, useable? Is it that they have superior quality of glass that compensates for this, or some other explanation?

Check your scope specifications again.

I have two of the Weaver T-36s. The objective is 40mm, not 42.

The scope is fine on nice days. It's a long range scope to be used during the day only. Better not be too overcast or too early or late in the day.

The tracking on the dials is awesome.

Thank you Bayou. I would be using it for 100 to 300 yards. Is it too powerful for 100?

As was said already, no it's not. However you had better be VERY steady holding the rifle or you will get seasick looking through the scope. :)

When I do load development at 100 yards, I set up a tall piece of cardboard (at least 3 feet tall) and draw a vertical line top to bottom. Then I put a small dot at the bottom with a medium marker and mark off inches from 20 to 35 from that dot. I then aim at the dot on the ground and I can then witness the group forming at about 28-29 inches above, for my 1000 yard come ups. Not seeing the shots accumulate at your aiming point is beneficially cathartic; well, at least for me. I have produced minuscule groups 29 inches above my aiming point.
