Taming the 20 Vartarg recoil...

You ever get the achy shoulder from being pounded by your sub-caliber varmint launcher... but you just didn't want the ear-splitn' headache that goes with some massive, clam-shell muzzle brake .

I just finished up another Remy Vartarg, and seein's how its too damn cold (and dark) to shoot after work, I spent an evening on the lathe to solve both problems... a muzzle brake with an over-sleeve to direct the blast forward. Kinda disperses that report while taking the thump  out of the mini-howitzer.

Now, before ya get your whities in a wad about the muffler effect, I can tell ya that I can't really tell the difference 'twixt this and the bare barrel. Seems that the crack of 4000fps, the splat of exploding p-dog meat, and some insane giggling pad your eardrums enough they don't even ring!

I like it. I had a muzzlebrake special built at 30 degree holes angled forward, back in the early 90's.I called it the "Gentlemens Brake" The guys around me couldnt believe how unabusive it was to them next to me shooting in 1K Matches. Your on the right track....to many so called muzzlebrake guys only see the $$$$, dont give a damn, about the guy next to them . Your design goes A step farther, one piece of craftsmanship, I applaud you! Pete

Very nice knurl on that and the rest looks top notch as well. Doggone I miss a mill and lathe. :(:(:(

Excellent idea and design, good looking machine work.

But after ten years of pure rat shooting joy behind my 20VT, I seriously question the need for a brake on a rifle shooting only about 18grs of powder behind a 32 or 40gr bullet. Recoil? Really?

that's cool, maybe unnecessary for me but, still cool. I think the OP's third line says gives us more clues, "seein's how its too damn cold (and dark) to shoot after work" I think he was bored and needed something to do. just teasing. great job, especially the knurling. hey can you take a pic of your knurling tool. I would like to see it. thanks

The machine work looks really good, and knurled. Most shops won’t bid on anything that has knurls. I would be happy to have one of those, maybe even a little steel wool to keep it shiny? Wink wink, nod nod.

My knurling tool is one of those cheap $25 Chinesium plier-looking things that did it best to come apart and climb into the chuck on this project. Still, I like it, even though the results aren't always this nice. My work is a really just a testament to the quality of instruction you can get from some of the excellent machinists that share their skills on YouTube. Those guys set the bar for me.

Prior to joining this forum, my idea of no recoil was a 223. I love my Vartarg...wasn't aware it had recoil.

There is an expression that my wife and friends throw at me about some of my ideas... "Solution looking for a problem". I can appreciate the workmanship as well as the pride of doing something original from scratch. Kudos!

I realize that that chambering really has very little recoil but does your brake design actually reduce recoil substantially? I guess more so, how well would it work on a magnum caliber?
