Tales from the creedmoor aisle

the recent one mile creedmoor post and black friday got me thinking of some yarns ive overheard at the gun stores. Today i heard “man im thinkin of gettin me one of those creedmoors, they got the axis on black friday sale- whatchu think?” The reply from a guy with a cart loaded with american gunner ammo said “man its a good gun but if you cant see 1000yds on your stand its kind of a waste” and a few weeks ago “man that creedmoor is the ticket. Kills deer faster than any gun i ever seen. Son killed one at 400yds during youth season.” To which the next guy replied “my son killed his first deer with it at 560yds yesterday” to which the other replied “got a buddy that killed one at 8 something last year” then the other “i killed a coyote at 990 last year” which is when i chimed in “ man how much above a coyote you gotta aim with a creedmoor at 990?” To which he replied “i got a nikon with the bdc reticle so i didnt have to aim high”
There are plenty more if you just listen in the creedmoor aisle

Talked to a guy who stated he shot a cow elk at 600 yards. Said he held right on the top of its back. Obviously I was alarmed and confused by the aiming point, so I asked him what distance he zeroed his rifle. Of course the answer was 100 yards. Now thinking he might have a faulty rangefinder, I asked him which rangefinder he uses? He said he didn't have one yet but was planning on getting one real soon.

I’ve never had any fascination with long range hunting. I’d rather things be close and personal. Different strokes for different folks.

However, if I had to choose a weapon for that half mile shot of a lifetime, I’d go straight down the creedmoir aisle and grab a RPR, a box of premium factory ammo, a bipod and a talisman.

I thought that “Talismans” had to be earned?

He musta had one of them Vortex crossfire scopes to shoot that accurately!!

I hear that from many, not just Creedmoor shooters but its the new flavor. I think the hunting shows and you-tubers promote this kid of nonsense, part of the reason why I cant watch those kill em in a fenced in food plot on private property with a guide from a stand programs.

BTW: I shot a Squirrel at 997 yards, while running (me not the Squirrel) using the bottom hashmark on my 32X scope with my RPR in 6 CM. I wish someone was there to see it !

He was actually shooting a 6.5mm-50BMG Ackley Improved, which the seller he bought it from told him was a Creedmoor Really Awesome Precision Magnum (aka "6.5 CRAP Mag" to those in the know). A 143 ELDX at 4300fps puts down elk nicely by aiming just above the spine; it only has 18 inches of drop when zeroed at 300. You haven't REALLY hunted until an elk does somersaults like a prarie dog!

It seems that I made ALL my really long range kills back in the day before range finders. Judging distance without one is simply a SWAG. Some have the talent and experience to judge distances, the rest of us need to measure.

Ok it’s not a creed story but years ago a guy told me he was driving through Oklahoma and seen some folks on side of the road looking through binoculars. He said he pulled over and asked what they were doing. They replied that they we’re looking at a deer and handed him the binoculars. He said he told them that’s real nice are you going to shoot it? They replied are you crazy that’s way to far. He asked them if they minded if he takes a shot. They said no go ahead. The feller telling the story said he got his old 30-30 from behind the seat of his Elcamino and knocked that buck down with the first shot (mind you this was from the side of highway ). He said one one the guys hollered great shot.

I had to ask the question how far was it. He said I’m not sure but it took til almost dark to drive out to get him. He also said that he ran them big tires on the back of his car to get better milage cause it was running downhill all the time. Kid you not he was serious.
