Taking the plunge

I just sent my check off to purchase my first F Class Rifle. I've shot for years but nothing like F Class. I've been waiting for my oldest to finish travel softball. Next Fall she heads off to play in college so I've started accumulating key components. I'm hoping to practice enough to at least participate in a few matches this year. Would really like to make one of the big events and attend one of the long range schools. Don't have a clue when it comes to reading wind. If there's any better schools appreciate input.

Awesome! You don't need to practice to participate. I understand what you are thinking, I did the same. Wish I would have just went to a match instead of wasting all that time. I think I learned more at one match than I did shooting 300 rounds on my own. Go to the first match you can find! Good luck!

+1 what Boltman said... A couple of friends of mine spent over a year trying to get me into F-Open.. I was just not one of those guys that competed at anything.. So one of them convinced me to watch a match. I did, it was a 1000 yard match. Then I watched a second time. The third time I competed at 1000 yards. It is the competition with others and their input along with the "experience" that helped me along the way... I am NOT the best LONG range shot on this terra firma, however, what I learned, I learned by evaluating and taking others advice and putting it into practice!

There is nothing that compares to shooting in a match. You will learn more competing in a match than anything you can do on your own. Just go. PS have fun!

Welcome to the club! But you will need more than one check! haha Are you shooting open or f/tr? There are a bunch if great guys on this site that will help you out with questions, as they have with myself and many others, at this very addictive sport. So ask the questions before you waste time and money on un needed items. But have fun.

Thanks for the input. The rifle is set up for F TR. I still need to pick up a scope, bipod and rear bag. At least those are the major expenditures. I'm hoing to actually get out in a couple months. But I will head the advice and start getting to matches as soon as I can.

where are you from? there was a nice thread started a while back that listed alot of ranges that participate in f-class. check it out. i agree with the previous post that you will learn alot more at matches then you will on your own, but self practice never hurts. its just nice to have a spotter and someone to "coach" with.

Just be warned! This sport is soooo addicting!

I have been heavily involved in the offroad and offroad racing scene for many years. Spent A LOT of money. Now that my kids are grown, I have got into FTR and it is my stress relief! Job has been very hectic this year and not attended half the matches I wanted to but have had a blast.

When I shoot, it is "my world"....Everything else in my mind goes blank and I love it! Except when I get so tunnel vision on the target that I blank out the wind....or even the target number :P

Have fun!

Bill, OKC gun club has 600 yard matches the third Saturday of the month. Come on up, there are several shooters from the North Texas area that shoot there. Great place to start and some really good guys to shoot with. The Oklahoma City Gun Club does have a web site so you might want to check it out. Hope to see you there!

Take a look at Nancy Thompkins book Prone and Long Range Rifle Shooting. She is extremely experienced and breaks everything down so that anyone can understand it. She has been a sling shooter for decades but she, her husband Mid and daughters Michelle and Shari (when she is not sky diving with the Golden Knights) also shoot F-Class and she covers it in the book.

I thought that Mid was Nancy's dad :)

Medic505,

Thanks for the heads up on the OKC Club. I'll definitely look them up. I'm in the Dallas area so the trip there isn't bad at all.

I'll also look up Nancy's book.

Thanks to all..
