A punch and light taps with a hammer, on the pin, have always done the trick for me.

I learned this the hard way..get a large clear freezer bag and use this to dissesamble / assemble anything spring loaded..otherwise you'll be on the phone to Savage for parts

thanks to everyone for thier imput especially lal357 for that very informative post have learned alot already about savages thanks again shooter63.

no problem the plastic bag should be required (i lost a spring and ball in a shag carpet pain in the arse to find had to use a magenet so now its zip locs). those are some good videos he puts up helped me alot with 2 biulds thinging about starting a 3rd here in a few weeks just not sure on what cal yet.

one reason i was going to take ejector out in first place was to stop it from scaring up my brass see post below this one scared sholders have plenty of feed back from that as well one idea im definately going to try is using grit paper with ejector back in just to see if it eliminates my problem with ejector draging brass back out of chamber across a sharp place in lug run dont really need ejector but hate the thoughts of a sharp place in there will try this also and keep everyone posted thanks again for everyones help & maybe someone else will benefit from all this shooter63.

Just to add some options, there is a tool designed to hold the ejector down while you punch out the pin. This has the advantage of relieving pressure on the cross pin so that it is easier to remove with less chance of damaging the plunger. My homemade trick for holding the ejector down involves using an empty case held in position with a wire hook.
The zip-loc bag trick sounds foolproof.

Break a small driller and use it together with a hammer to remove the pin.

The ejector is the only part at savage rifles that realy makes trouble. It`s not designed very well - the force of the spring is sometimes to small and it can get to stuck.

If anyone from savage is reading here: please take a look at the Remington 700 ejector - this one is well designed. Copy it and your guns are perfekt.

I just punched mine out with a wire brad and a few light taps with a small hammer while keeping my thumb over the ejector so it dosen't become a projectile! ;) easy as pie, we'll see about getting it back in though! ;) And yes, the pin comes out from the side with the cut-out! So tap it from the other side! When reinstalling, make sure to insert the pin from the cut-out side with the crimped side up! (Same way it came out!) ;)

Once you have it out, and especially if you do some sort of precision target shooting from a bench and particularly if you normally shoot one round at a time, give it a try without the ejector. It sounds like reaching into the action and fishing out each piece of spent brass is stupid, but once you get used to it you'll find it easier than deflecting and chasing-down brass spit out to who-knows-where.

Now, collecting spent brass is a simple reflex for me. I pick out the piece, carefully place it on a clean towel, and collect it later without worrying about dirt and grit.

It's even easier for me... I open the bolt in a controlled fashion, the case pops out into my waiting hand, and I put it in back in the ammo box and grab another round. Or I let it hit my palm, and fall into a waiting container under/alongside the gun. Can't do that without an ejector o_O

I'm with you Mozella!

My two Savage Bench Rest guns have had the ejector spring changed to a piece of a disposable lighter flint spring. My 6mm is so loose it usually doesn't eject at all. But, no problem, reaching into the action is part of my drill now! My 7mm will have its ejector neutered as well!

Its a 2 person job at my house. I put the bolt in my little rubber jawed vise. I take an empty case, slip it under the extractor and depress the plunger. Then the wife taps out the pin, while I hold the punch, and she catches the retaining pin with her left thumb and forefinger. I use a plastic bag for the extractor while the bolt is still in the vise.

I'd like to hear more of what everyone is using for a spring to lighten spring pressure on the ejector plunger.

The stock ball is 1/8" aka 0.125"... people frequently replace them with ones that are 9/64" aka 0.140"

As far as lightening the spring... i don't replace it; I take a pair of side-cutters and clip a coil off one end.
