Tactical 6BR Build

My next build is a tactical rifle with a Surgeon 591 action. Krieger barrel, McMillan A5 stock, Sphur mount/rings and a S&B 12-20X56. I really want this rifle to be a little different by having it as a 6br repeater that will feed smoothly in a 5 and 10 round box clip. Does anyone make such a clip? Anyone custom made one

I have read a number of articles on short magazines and tube rifles but none are exactly as to what I am looking for.

I have spent quite a bit of money on parts for this build. All that it left is to purchase the bottom metal and magazine that will work.

Any help with ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Just picked up the barrel action for my 6br repeater. It is going in a manners t4 stock with badger bottom metal. I am going to try the AI mags just a standard .308 mag. I will be bedding the stock this weekend and hope to get to the range in a couple days. So far i ran a mag full of dummy rounds thru it and it was good. If you look in the gun of the week there is a tactical 6br they mod. the mag with a spacer in the front. I am going to shoot the rifle first but am leaning toward mod my mags. If you would like i will report back after range time.

You can modify a 223REM AICS magazine pretty easy. It's polymer and just requires some filing in the right places. It will fit 7 rounds and seems quite reliable. There was a post or two on Snipershide on how to do it. I've modified a magazine and it seems to cycle flawlessly, but I'm still waiting on a 6BRX barrel to fully test it.

I think you will find that a non-modified .308 AI mag will feed just fine. I have a semi-tactical 6BRX that I have been feeding from a non-modified AI mag. Then recently I had a .20 BR built and I had the gunsmith modify a .223 poly mag with his mill. He did a wonderful job and it feeds terrific. I can actually (and do very often) switch the mags back and forth between rifles without any issues at all, but I do prefer the .223 poly mag, as I can put 7 rounds in that baby.....

I shoot both rifles in tactical type matches where feeding is a must.....and so far so good!!

Wish me luck and I hope it works

Do you know what your smith did for modifications or could you send me his contact info.

Thanks

i would recommend trying one of the mcrees precision modular stocks. they are made from aluminum and anodized in any color you want. plus, no bedding required and they can be made for any receiver. they are TOP notch stocks--i have one on my tactical 6BR/F-open rifle

OK got out and put a few rounds thru the new rifle. 6mm BR repeater. Used a standard AI .308 mag. Shot 9 rounds out of mag, feeding was perfect. I am shooting the 105 hybr with an OAL of 2.400 hope this helps.

Here is a post that talks about using the 223AI Mag.http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1803196

Here is the important post from seven mm:

"Take your aics 223 mag apart. Take some masking tape and place it on the outside of the feedlips marking them at 0.400" wide, this serves as a simple visual reference of how much you need to take off/remove. Take a mill if you have one or a dremel, like I did blush and tkae your time and open it up. When this is done drop a 6br round in from the bottom, you will see that the mag narrows at the top before the round gets to the feed lips. This area needs to be sanded/ground open enouogh to allow the cartridge to get to the feed lips, sand this out at the same angle the feelips are at, go slow and keep checking with your test round.

This should only take you 15-20 minutes, it's a quick fix and if I was going to do any more I would modify these mags before a 5rd 308 mag just because it is easier and you end up with more capacity.

This last section has to do with how the mag sits in your bottom metal, with my 6br this was the key to what made it feed without flaw.

The last thing you need to do is insert the mag into your rifle, after it has latched grab the mag and see how much up and down slop there is, on my badgger m5 it fits tight as it should, however on my surgeon dbm there is a lot of up and down slop, enough that I would get stove pipe type jams, I tried this on both my surgeon dbm's with equal amounts of slop, imo this needs to be fixed by remoming the "tbar" release on the surgeon and welding more material to the top of the release then grind it down to where it needs to be. The other way to fix this is to take a bit of devcon and add length to the release catch on the magazine, once it's set up file it square. Make it so the mag seats easily but without much up and down slop. By doing these things my 6br fed great, better than it ever has."

I did this mod to one magazine and it was pretty simple: my MAK seats the mag tightly: so no need for the second part of what he describes above.
