I have switched to a 1-9 twist savage VLP in 223 hoping to shoot a heavier bullet.. have been shooting 50 vmax .5 group size at 100,any help on 69 to 75 grain loads would be appreciated...also what kind of accuracy can be expected from this rifle... Thanks in advance....

All of my 1:9 twist Savages prefer H4895, CCI 450 or Rem 7.5 primers, under Nosler or Sierra 69 gr HPBT's about 0.020" off the lands.

I have (2) Savages both have 1 in 9 twist. The very best load I have found is with 69gr Sierra Match kings 25.0 gr w748 Federal 205M Just touching lands. 70gr Berger VLD shoot almost as well with the same load. I also have had very good luck with 73gr Berger Match over 24.0 W748 Federal 205M touching lands. I have shoot all the 75gr and 77gr they shot alright not as well as the 69,70 and 73gr bullets.

I added a Savage LRPV .223 1:9 twist to my collection hoping to shoot the heavier bullets. 68 grain Hornady and 69 grain Sierra and Noslers match bullets all shoot about the same, with most groups in the high .5s up to .75 inch. I get an occasion smaller group, but it will also spit out a few larger groups. I was a little disappointed. What it does shoot great is 52 grain Nosler custom competition bullets and H322 powder. Most groups in the .5s, a few in the .4s and even a few in the .3s. It also shoots Nosler 55 grain ballistic tips pretty well. Not what I was after, but it is what it is.

Funny you say this! I have an FV that seems to love the 52 gr. comp bullets also! I may follow this post as advice and try the 55 BT's in it also!

ttfreestyle...I have a Savage M12,LRPV,.223 Rem,factory 26" 1/9 twist bbl. ,Savage F-class stock(skim bedded),timed action,Weaver T36x. Best load(so far) is Lapua brass(necks turned to .0125"),F205's,23.5gn of VV N135,and a 69gn Sierra .010" off the lands. Using a solid bench/rest & wind flags in GOOD conditions,I have shot many 5 shot groups under .5" @ 200yds. NO problem at all shooting .7"-.8" groups @ 200yds in average conditions. Maybe this will help you. Good luck...good shooting...gpoldblue

As mentioned above, the Sierra 69 gr. MatchKing #1380 has been my standard medium weight bullet in my 9 and 8 twists 223's. I've always seated .020" off the lands, with Varget powder. When my Savage 10FP was new (2001) it easily held moa, with 5 shots, and at times under moa. That rifle now has a Hart 1-8, and the #1380 continues as the favorite, with only occassional 77 & 80 gr. Sierra's. Got almost 3000 rds. out of the factory barrel before it started throwing an occassional unexplained wild shot & copper fouling became a problem, and was then replaced with the Hart.

ok got the vlp cleaned and scoped (it was filthy from factory). went to the range with three different loads with new win brass. it out shot my 12 lrpv 6br at 100 yards in great conditions... 25.5 varget, 69 smk, br4 primer seated to 2.955 ogive. this wasnt suppost to happen.was it?? two groups of three shots were in the .3s best i could measure, well guess can just say thanks guys for all the info and im goin shootin...

wierd i got picked up the same rifle and did a ladder test and found it liked the 62gr armscore fmj and the hornady 75gr hpbt match bullets hated the 55gr

I've never found a FMJ bullet that did anything other than pattern like buckshot.

I wish I had a clue about why barrels like some bullet weights, powders, primers, brass, seating depth and voodo chants better than others. I would make a fortune if I did.
