Switch to Alpha

Hi I'm on a couple of new 6BRA barrels. I'm switching over from Lapaua to Alpha brass. I use H4895, 450 and a 105 - 108 class bullet. I am thinking of starting with H4895 at 29.0 or 29.5 while fireforming and looking for a accuracy load. I would like to shoot the low node to start with as we shoot a max of 400 yards. Do you think this is to high a load to start with? Ideas?

It just depends on how many charge steps you want to evaluate to make your choice.

You could bring that down to 27.0 and start looking to make sure you don't pass over the lower nodes, or just go with your plan and find the nearest node.

Typical BRA and Dasher loads can go a little higher before hitting pressure, but with components the way they are these days I am sympathetic to abbreviating searches. You may miss some lower nodes starting at 29.0 but there is no way to know without testing. H4895 is well behaved, so you have that in your favor.

Have you started yet?
With the Alpha brass, no need to fire form. They sell 6bra brass.
I would also start lower, maybe at 28.0 and work up.
Since you're not shooting at 1000yds. the lower nodes might be what you are looking for.

No I haven't started yet. It will be a couole of weeks as I'm waiting for Kelbly's to pillerbed a Panda stock for me. I will stay in touch.

when running alpha in my 28" krieger Im getting 2920 @ 29.6gr 4895 with barts 103s
For reference my lapua load is 30.1 for same velocity both shoot to same poa/poi

My 6BRA likes the Alpha brass with 29.9 of H4895 With a 103RH jammed .020. 2970FPS

I see the 6BR likes around 2900 fps in some rifles with the 108 class bullets. I'm wondering if that would be the low node for the 6BRAI? If I could get the low node to work wouldn't the brass and barrel last longer?

Yes in general. The question is how significant is the difference in life for the brass or the barrel.

You will certainly shorten brass life with some of the hotter competition loads you hear about on the internet. There are folks who don't mind killing their brass early for the sake of a competitive edge, so be careful chasing loads and high nodes you read or hear about.

There are no solid math models for barrel life, but in general the heavier and hotter you push, the shorter the life. When barrel life is studied, there is always a huge variation in the stats, so it shouldn't surprise anyone when the predictions don't match a specific sample.
