SWFA Super Sniper scope ?

Try www.supersniper.com for reviews. Lots of shooters love them. A few don't. They seem to be working to improve them due to military interest. I'm waiting see see what happens with the variable.

I've got one of the 10x rear-focus ones on a Savage 10FP. It is ok glass with repeatable, accurate adjustments, but, as the guy above stated, it is not the best in low-light situations.

As previously stated not the best in low light situations they aren't the worst either. I just shot my 20X SS scope at 1000 on a grey rainy day and could see the 8" disk well enough to hit it when I did my part in the wind. Great scope for the money. I own two. My Nikon Buckmaster is clearer though. teele1

I have two... a 10x model I picked up at a gun show back in '98... when they were going for a good bit more than they are now, and a 16x model I got a couple years ago.

Both track flawlessly, and once I discipline myself to accept the coarser reticle,a legacy of the 'mil-dot' ranging system) I've shot some of my smallest groups using these scopes. The optics are 'good' not 'great', and being a fixed power scope w/o a particularly large front objective... they aren't especially bright. The clicks, though, are what I depend on. A small amount of user maintenance is required, consisting mainly of replacing the factory salt-water/marine grease on the turret O-rings,a legacy from the original contract) with some light dielectric grease, get one of the little blister packs of spark plug boot grease from your local auto parts store) usually gets rid of any complaints about mushiness. Some folks remove the O-rings entirely, but the turrets seem to spin a little too freely afterwards for my tastes.

These scopes are a good value for the money. There are scopes that do one thing or another better, or have fancier features. Very few of those do so for $300, though. It may be a sad testament to my bad luck with optics, but I keep the SS16X42 model in QD mounts so I can move it from gun to gun... it's my 'reference' scope for when a gun starts acting wonky and the only explanation left is 'maybe the scope...'. The SS gets mounted up, and usually the problems just magically go away...

Mike McDonald on riflescopes.com,tactical)got one of the improved 10X models and says it is as bright and clear in low light conditions as the Leupold M3 10X and almost as bright as the EXOTIC prototype.

I have one of the first 10X ones that were made for the Navy Seals with the side focus parallax. It is a great scope! 100% repeatable, nice and bright, every bit as good as the Leupold 10X Tactical at a fraction of the cost.
I have heard that there was a period between that model and the current model that they had some problems, but understand that is in the past. If you opt for the 16X or 20X the cross-hairs get progressively heavier as you step up in magnification.
Would I buy another? If they are as good as the one that I currently have the answer is an unequivocal yes.

Hello,

A Friend made me aware of this posting.

I'm Mike McDonald, the fellow referenced in regard to the SuperSniper post on Optics Talk.

Mike Miller is of Tactical Intervention is referred to as "Tactical". We are acquaintances but are not the same person.

I have the 10x with side focus and the 16X and love them both. However, I do not beliee they were ever purchased by the military. I believe they were made for review for purchase and as such got a FSN/NSN but never was issued.

I would not hesitate to buy more if I need them. Great optics and repeatable.

Several SS's were and are purchased by the US military, to my understanding.
Several Army Designated Marksmen are using them.

I too am a big Super Sniper fan.

What experience do ya'll have with the SWFA Super Sniper scope ?

I have a 20X on a 700 Varmint. It is my loaner rifle for new shooters. Mechanically it is very good. The AO could have a finer adjustment. The glass is not to bad, but there are other scopes that are brighter, but you will pay $$$. I do wish they would make one with a 1/2 moa dot. The 10X and 16X are nice. If I were going to buy another one I would get the 10X with the side focus.
Overall, a good, sturdy scope for the money.

Cheers,
Steve Urban

I like many people have the age old question of which scope to get. Where I'm at now is I have a .223 Rem 26" heavy barrel bolt action with a Weaver 3-9x V9 that is getting dedicated to bench, casual competition use. The ranges I've got to play in are 100-300 yard. The Weaver is a fine deer gun scope, at 3-4 power it's clear and holds it's zero. However, at 300 yd at 9 power the paper target looks awfully small, dark, and the eye relief is really annoying. I'm posting this on the Super Sniper thread because the 20x SS is one of the scopes I'm interested in, or a Weaver T24. After reading about the subject on the internet I'm getting the impression the a 24x, 36x, or even a 45x is better suited to 100 yd shooting but a lower power like a 6x or 10x is better suited to 300 yd. That seems counter-intuitive to me, but I've never shot with anything higher than 9x. Is a 20x SS going to give me a more usable sight picture than a Nikon Buckmaster/Bushnell 3200 cranked up to full power? Do I have to pony up for a 8-32x Bushnell 4200/Burris Black Diamond to shoot comfortably at both 100 and 300 yd? Pardon my ignorance, I'm kinda new at this.

I've never looked through a 20x SS but have read where the crosshairs on the 20X are rather thick and might be difficult to get a precise aim. The 10x crosshairs should work ok. I would prefer 15x or more @ 300+ yards.

I believe that the better you can see the better you can shoot. So the higher mags would be for long range shooting. When you get above 20x, mirage distorts you view more at long range, say 500+ yards.,especially @ 1000)

If just shooting targets a fixed power is ok but variables are more useful. You can adjust it to the power you prefer.

Optics are fair, reticle is pretty thick, adjustment range is outstanding with good to very good repeatability, durability seems good as of right now. I don't know the exact round count, brothers rifle)somewhere between 200-300 on a braked 12 lb 300win mag shooting 190 gr Bergers. This is the 20x version.

Is this true of all Super snipers??? A fellow I know says his has "ONE MINUTE CLICKS". Each time you click up or down, side to side it moves your bullet one inch @ 100 yards? I don't know if I could live with that.

Yes. Unless someone has one that is either a) broken or b) some special run that I've never heard of, they have always had 1/4 minute clicks. Period. Might be he's referring to minute,as in true MOA) vs. inch,as in 'shooters MOA', or Inches-Per-Hundred-Yards aka IPHY) movements, but the increments are 1/4.

No. The SS has 1/4 MOA clicks.
Dead nuts accurate too. The guy either needs to send it back in for repair, or he is mistaken.
