And it did what to them, or were you listening to some experts opinion who heard it or read it "some where".

It started eating them up. I posted pictures taken with my borescope. I don't listen to most of the panty waisted Internet Experts still living in mama's basement. I'm 72 years old, been in two shooting wars and can form my own opinions about things. I did not like what Sweet's was doing to my barrels following their directions and quit using it. Do you work for Sweet's?

No, I am 73 and have used Sweets and left it soak in 20 or 30 barrels the last 25 years with no issues as have many others on this thread so I suppose we will need to each do what we feel is right. Maybe some specifics as to what you saw would help. You where using a bore scope? If you were only using Sweets and not using something else to clean the carbon you might have been getting less then optimal results. Thank you for your service, I served also which of course has nothing to do with cleaning a barrel properly.

Almost all of the Hoppes stories of damage I've heard have been around plated metals, usually nickel.

I was researching another matter and came across this note
about nickel plating......For Nickel to adhere to steel products,
Copper plating is layed down first, and the nickel plates to the
copper......That would make sense if any cleaner containing
ammonia would screw up the nickel. It's the underlying copper
that the ammonia is going after, then leaving not much for the
nickel to hold on too. Still going to school !!

Actually Knotwild my first 4 to 6 patches is water with a bit of Dawn in it. Takes that first heavy black carbon out cheaply and just as well as a solvent.

That is similar to what the gunsmith that built my first custom said - alternate between solvent and copper remover until both treatments come out with clean patches. He said we are laying copper on top of powder fowling. It made sense to me. He also said never leave Sweets in the barrel over 20 minutes.

I use some Hopper mixed with Kroil. It works but very slow. If you have time to let soak several days at a times it will get the carbon out but not so good on copper. I have pretty much replaced it with Montana Extreme. Hoppes by far has the best aroma. As far as a 1 step process the no longer available Gunslick Foam works as well as anytimg. I guess debating gun cleaning cause as much high blood pressure as a political debate. Good to have something to in the winter,lol.

I believe Hoppes bought out Gunslick and that it is now labeled as Hoppes Foam cleaner.

I believe your right. However they now give you less for more. If I go to my local range and shoot less than 15 rounds I give the barrel a squirt of Gunslick and let it soak on the way home. It works very well and seems to speed the cleaning process.It is much more aggressive than straight #9.

If I'm not mistaken, I think MVO was used in one of the Ed's
Red mixes.

Nooooo! Please, no more things for cleaning barrels. I already have multiple lifetimes supply of too many already.

If I'm not mistaken, I think MVO was used in one of the Ed's
Red mixes.

After I am finished cleaning and dry everything out. Right before I shoot, I apply 4 drops of MARVEL mystery oil on a patch, put in bore guide and push through the barrel. It seems to help them clean easier and makes that first shot at 1000 yards alot closer in elevation then if you don't. Matt

Sweets is also a good powder solvent. Shooting from 8,000 to 10,000 dogs a year and shooting Benchrest does qualify to say "I like Sweets".

Back in the days before there were multiple brands of cleaning solvents I alternated Shooters Choice and Sweets until the patches came out squeaking clean. Man, that is a LOT of prairie dogs!

I brsh with Hoppe's #9 and use sweets after if I know the barrel will copper foul a little. I shoot 100-150 rounds before I clean on a barrel I have some rounds thru. I am 73 andhave been shooting dogs since I was 5. I don't know anyone who has shot more than me. I am talking kills, not just rounds fired.

Opening an old wound......!!

It's been a good several or more weeks since I filled and
corked my old Bartlein test barrel with Sweets......Pulling
out the wax plug and dumping the contents only showed
a light green hue. Pushing a tight mop thru the bore showed
a hint of beige. A couple of patch's with Hoppe's came clean.
Absolutely no damage I can tell......This barrel originally had
1313 rounds thru it from the SA284 development. I have cut
off the tenon and some off the front, and sent it over to my
buddy, Ethan Lam's to be chucked up and re-cut for my next
cat to be used as a fire forming mule barrel.

How about putting sweets in and letting it just sit? There's the theory that there's a chemical change when the solution dries out.
