Swarovski Z5 and Leica ER5 turret configuration seems limited

I'm trying to find a reasonably priced long range scope that can be used for dialup to 1000 yds.

Both the Swarovki and Leica have superb optics, but their turrets really have me baffled.

The Swarovki Z5 5-25 comes with a "ballistic turret" that has adjustable rings you can set to 200/300/400 etc. The specs say it has 43 IPHY elevation adjustment but the turret appears to be limited to 1 revolution which is 16 IPHY. So the 43 IPHY elevation adjustment is not really available.

Even if the rotation stop could be removed? there does not appear to be any index to enable returning to zero?

The Leica is even more dear I say it "stupid"! 70 MOA of elevation adjustment, but no zero stop and no index to keep track of revolutions. You can screw the dial 9 times around and havnt got a clue where you are.

What the f...k were they thinking...clearly there were not thinking at all! Thats about a dumb as their Geovid range finder is in only displaying drop on MOA in whole numbers. Is it really that hard to make a scope with a turret that can be used to dial in at long range?

The only other viable option out there seems to be the Meopta HTR 6.5-20*50 which is the old Zeiss Conquest MC that Meopta made for Zeiss USA. I've got the new Zeiss HD5 in 5-25 and its is a serious downgrade on the old MC, optics are worst, turrets are hopeless, tunnel FOV and 5 oz heavier. How they can say thats an upgrade is beyond me.

I really want the Leica 4-20 as its the perfect varipower for my use, and every reasonably priced, but its no use for dialing at all:(

I'm sure I did read somewhere that the Leica had a return to zero, but doesnt look like it to me. Someone please tell me I'm wrong and that the Leica or Swarovki can be used to dial.

There's always the old reliable NF NXS 5.5-22. Tho weight would be considerably more than the other scopes you mentioned.

Zeiss was foolish to terminate Meopta making the Conquest glass. That was Meopta's non-HD glass back when they made the MC and it's still better than whomever is making the new Zeiss HD5 glass. If they would have stuck with Meopta and let them put their own HD glass in the new conquest HD5 line, it would have been a further improvement and Zeiss would have had another highly desired optic in their lineup. Meopta glass is no doubt some of the best available on the market today.

You could always buy a Leupold X111 long range target. 8.5x25x50. Good in light, around 21 ounces, 95 MOA and a fairly rock solid scope with a lifetime quarantee. It would be a great Varmint scope for the money. Matt

Meopta sources the glass they use from Hungary. Zeiss has more than 180 different types of glass to choose from. Real ED glass (HD is a marketing term) adds a considerable amount of money to the cost of optics.

I struggle with the Leupolds, I know they have a great warranty but I've never got excited looking through one. I'd give the VXIII 6.5-20x50 ago but it does nto have a quick focus eye piece

Im with you on that one. I've owned one leupold rifle scope in my life and it was a Mark 4. Didnt own it very long. Nothing impresses me about any leupold glass I've ever looked through. Only other leupold optic I've ever owned is their most expensive golden ring binocular. Pretty underwhelming experience as well. I respect leupold, but I will not own another one of their products as of right now. Their glass is sub par for the price point of their optics
