Swapping barrels on my ar ?

pitbull

Silver $$ Contributor
I have a Windham weaponry ww-15 varminter vex (see in pics). I wanted to take that barrel and change it to a krieger that I found on gunbroker. This is my first black gun I am learning. I see several different profiles.and options. This barrel is a little fatter I am wanting to keep my handguard and all that. Can somebody please take a look and tell me what I need to do. I notice this barrel has a dimple does mine and what's it for. I am sorry to ask these basic questions I just never thought I would even have a ar. The gun below is mine and the barrel is what I am intrested in

It should swap out with out a problem. The dimple is for a set screw on the gas block to ensure it lines up with the gas port. Your gas block may not be the same size as the one you are looking at. So you may need a new one, if you do I would recommend a clamp on with an adjustable port.. I am not really an AR guy but some one more knowledgable will be a long shortly for more/better input..

@DirtySteve is correct about the dimple. You need to determine what diameter gas block you will need, and what length gas system the new barrel is. Adjustable gas block isn’t needed unless you plan on running suppressed. Handguard may or may not work. Measure to see how much room you have between the barrel and the hand guard and see if you can find a low profile gas block that will work.

I have one really fat AR barrel and it requires a special nut. A typical barrel nut does not have a large enough inside diameter. So you may run in to that, I guess you won't know until you try.

That is a Service Rifle take off barrel. It will fit fine in your hand guard and nut. Looks like a standard 0.750” tenon so about any gas block should work.
