SW Oregon Blacktail Success

I just got back from a fantastic hunt in SW Oregon for Blacktail. This was my first time hunting these beautiful deer. I'm a flatland whitetail hunter from Missouri, and I sure enjoyed the scenery.

I hope you like the photos.

Wow, looks like we now have a "flatlander convert"!

Glad you enjoyed your Oregon adventure. I enjoyed your Oregon photos! Good job, and congrats on a nice non-typical Blacktail buck too! I'm guessing you'll be back........

P.S. Next time consider the "other" side of Oregon, the east side....sagebrush and juniper: mule deer and elk heaven.

Suhweeet! Looks like Douglas county...near Roseburg? That is a very nice blacktail. One of the nicer I have seen. There are a couple of AWESOME taxidermists in the area that specialize in those. Dennis King in Jacksonville and Mitch Cain in Dairy. I saw a lot of their work when I used to roam that area. If I am ever lucky enough to get one that nice, it would be permanent fixture on the wall. Most of my blacktail bucks have been Jackelope caliber antlers.

Steve :)

I will absolutely be back. Mule deer is on the agenda in the next year or two, and so is another trip to Oregon. I might have to combine the two.

We need specs on that nice looking rifle. Action, barrel, total weight, etc. Nice pics .:D

Thanks, Paul

This is a Defiance XM UL Deviant, with Manners EH1 stock, Defiance XM BDL style bottom metal, Proof Research 24" barrel, and Jewell trigger. It's currently sporting a 3-18x44mm VX-6. With scope/rings/loaded it weighs 9.5 lbs. Not anywhere near mountain rifle weights, but it shoots under .25 MOA with Norma brass, BR2's, and a 200 ELD-X, over 68.5 grains H4831SC @ 3.16" OAL. I'm happy.

Congratulations, Ryan!
Thank you sir.

Good eye. You are spot on. It's getting mounted for sure.

Nice drop tine - that's a beauty. Is that in or around the Roseburg area? Looks like familiar-ish terrain, but a lot of it looks the same down that way.

EDIT: I guess I should have read up one post where the location was identified... :-) Blacktail are all over Roseburg, I love hunting that area.

Great location for sure. I can't imagine a better place to hunt Columbia Blacktail.
