Surprising auction for Browning A-Bolt

Adam in WI

Practically lives here

So to the Browning guys I ask: what am I missing here? I get that it's a Medallion in a not so everyday chambering, but over $2000? I could start to understand if it had a high end scope and 400 rounds to go with, but this seems a little silly IMHO

I was wondering if this was a prefect confluence of shill bidder and someone with no intention of completing the sale.

And BTW, this is in no way a dig at Browning connoisseurs. Just looking to understand...

Lot of people have low level of ethics selling firearms. Greed overrides the fact they smear buying and selling firearms industry with overall bad representation of process. But then, lying and cheating is the "easy" button.

Starting bid was $0.01 and it is an auction so you must be talking about others in general and not this seller. I'd guess the high bid count is just 2 or 3 bidders going back and forth. Even in like new condition, it must have special significance to them to go this high.

Yes. Referring to many in the business. Easy to see on Gunbroker with amazingly wide range of prices different sellers same item.
But then it's just a fact of life of what happens in the world.

When some people get on an auction they lose all sense of worth.
There's a local auction site I frequent and you wouldn't believe the prices some people pay for stuff they can buy at a local shop for MUCH cheaper.
I think some just have the mentality that they're the only ones that can have an item and will bid whatever it takes to get it regardless of price.

Depending on who the seller and his buddies are..... they will place bids to try get a guy to keep going.

I've experienced it a couple times.

One real bidder and a couple fake buddy bidders.

That price doesn't make any sense.... unless barrel is filled with gold.

The Browning A-bolt stainless stalker was my second centerfire rifle, 7 Mag. This was back when being a student seemed eternal and a good deal of life passed between adding rifles, and there were more to choose from than there are now. I considered the A-Bolt design to be in a class apart from the competition.

I never liked the X-Bolt. When both were sold I hoped the X-Bolt would be the one forsaken. If the A-Bolt was preferable to all others, the X-Bolt would have been choice number, last. To me it looked like change directed by non-gun people, who had already budgeted an add campaign for a new rifle, because newness is better.

There are things like the Buckmaster Rambo style knife that are more appreciated long after they are gone. I don’t have that old gun but I did get an a-Bolt .223 heavy barrel target rifle that is basically put away as example of that breed.

I think that I saw a Remington 760 pump 308 go for over 2k recently on gunbroker.
Some things just don’t make any sense

I really liked the A-Bolt magazine system. It was the best of both worlds IMO. Quick to unload, spare magazine in the pocket, and easily top loaded which is something that cannot be said of the X-Bolt, Tikka, and a few others.

I checked some of the seller's recent reviews. He's had several sell seemingly very high in my opinion. However, in looking at the bid history on several recent sales, I didn't notice any trends with same usernames that would indicate any funny business in running up the bid. It seems some people just have more money than sense and are willing to pay high dollars for something they want.

I am one of the A Bolt enthusiasts, I mostly own A Bolts, along with a healthy dose of Remington 700's, in my opinion this is way out of line for this rifle. The days of paying a normal price for an A Bolt are long gone. Shame too, they are good rifles. Couldn't chase me down and give me an X Bolt. They are about holding a fence post.
Gun Broker is best viewed with a drink in hand , but keep your finger off the bid button.
