Surprise with New Brass

I just purchased some new Nosler .264 Win. Mag. brass for my old (but new-to-me) Schultz & Larsen M65DL rifle. I was somewhat shocked to discover that it wouldn't chamber. However, after a pass through a full-length sizing die, it now chambers.

I'm curious about this. How often have you guys had this experience? I'm wondering whether the rifle may have a slightly undersized chamber.

I'd rather have new brass that's a tad long than new brass that's .010-.015" short for my chamber. If it's getting loaded it's not like I dont have dies or anything.

I encountered a lot of Hornady 223 Rem (new cases) that were over size.

Since I always full size new cases using a zero bump it wasn't a problem. Once I ran them through the FL die they chambered without issue.

I have seen it a bunch. It is especially true with older rifles. Older rifles typically have sloppier chambers. Newer ones are cut to tighter tolerances. Once after firing some .308 ammo in my Remington 700P, I had to full length size it down to the base before I could get it to chamber in my newer M1A.

Good advice from others. On your rifle, congrats, you have one of the finest rifles ever built and a true gem to own and use. I have a 7x61 Sharp & Hart model 54. With 129 grain Hornady sst bullets it shoots in the .55-.6" range at 100 yds. Barrel cleanup is about as easy as any of the hand lapped benchrest barrels I've had over the years. My 54 is a cock on closing action, which many just don't like. Your 65 would be a cock on opening.

I bought the gun years ago for a song! The other issue that some didn't like with the 54 is the action port is really just an ejection port and not a loading port. You load the rifle from the bottom by unlatching the floorplate.

All in all, they were (and are although not imported to the US) exquisitely made rifles, all with superbly finished cut rifled barrels that, like I said, rival the finish of any quality hand lapped benchrest quality barrel today. Enjoy your rifle!! Keep that .264 Mag barrel clean, don't let it overheat, and don't give it a steady diet of top end loads and it should last longer than you will.

Fairly normal for new brass to need sizing based upon my limited experience. Found this to be the case with every caliber for which I have purchased new brass.
