surgeon action

I am building a new gun and was wondering what people thought of the surgeon actions, or how the company is to deal with. Wait time, cutomer service, quality, things like that. Any info would be nice. Thanks.

I have been shooting one for a year now and put 2500rds down two barrels and I would not change a thing. Mine is the single shot target action. There customer service is great. Preston is a active competitive shooter and understands what it takes to build a accurate and winning rifle. They are expanding there product line all the time and offer an action for just about any need. What type of rifle are you building?

Thanks for the reply, does any one know if they have the same tolerances of the bat and the other bench rest actions. I am building a 6.5-284.

They are set up for tactical use and are looser than a benchrest action. They are nicely made but seem a bit pricey to me.

When I got mine two years ago, they had two different type of actions, one for tactical use and one for target use. The target action has much tighter tollerances. I have two of the tactical actions, they are amazing.

As far as cost, they include as part of a one piece action a recoil lug and a 20 MOA base. When you campare with the cost of a custom action plus recoil lug and 20 MOA base, they are comparable in price.

I'm also looking at getting a surgeon here before long. I'm looking at the short action repeater, anybody have any experience with these? Will this action work with the stock bdl internal magazine or do I need to buy something like the hs magazine conversion.

I have a short Acton repeater. It is stainless steel action with a high carbon steel bolt. The bolt handle is part of the bolt not welded or sweated on. The bolt knob is threaded and can be changed. The recoil lug is double pinned. The bottom looks just like a Remington. The scope base, its a one piece base) use 8-40 screws and 2 dowel pins. The base is a accessory extra. The action is nice. The bottom metal from a 700 will fit the action.

Thanks bglenn. Will any of the Rem 700 one piece scope rails work,I have a Mark 4 rail for my Remmy, and this action will replace it.)? I thought the rails were integral to the action, or is that only on the high end models?

Just an FYI.

The design tolerances for the Surgeon SA repeater actions are loose to make the rifle dependable for tactical situations. The tolerances for their single shot actions are about half that of the repeater in the dimensions that are meaningful to accuracy. It is possible to buy a repeater action directly from Surgeon that includes a closer fitting single action bolt. That's what I did. Nothing to report yet as my barrel is still on order. I intend to use the rifle for mostly punching paper so my life doesn't depend on cycling the action. Still, hard to imagine a .308 that's not a repeater. Just my thoughts.

The action itself is quite a chunk of steel with the scope rail and recoil lug built in. My only wish for improvement is that they offered it in stainless. The bolt parts can be replaced with anything that's genuine Remington or clone including the extractor. Also something that I approve of.

The Surgeon action has the rail built into the action along with the recoil lug. The SA repeater does not have the rail built into the action and does not have a built in recoil lug and it is Stainless.

Not quite. There is the SA Repeater and SA Single Shot. Both have integrated recoil lugs and rails. They differ in tolerances.

The RSR action has the pinned lug and removable rail.

Thanks for the correction. I need to look at the letters on my action again and get the letters straight.

i have been using the RSR lately. i have used lawton and stiller remington clones in the past and neither holds a candle to the surgeon RSR. when you have them sitting in your hands, you will know what i mean. the tolerances on the rail are so close that they actually snap into place before you lock them down with the screws which happen to be oversized. the rail is also double pinned to the top of the receiver and the recoil lug is DOUBLE pinned as opposed to the single pin in other clones. the only receivers that are remington clones that are as good or better are the surgeon with integral lug and rail and the bat VR. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPPOINTED IN A SURGEON of any model for any application other than 100/200yd benchrest. i am not sure it wouldnt work fine for that either.
