Surgeon 591R .473" Bolt Face with .062" firing pin hole?

Gentlemen,
What is the purpose for the .062" firing pin hole option on the Surgeon 591R? High pressure combined with a small rifle primer like .308 Palma Brass or the 6.5x47 Lapua? What does this do for reliability and/or safety? Your input is greatly appreciated...

Pretty much what you described. Surgeon is just one of many that do this. I don't know if Surgeon always had the small firing pin or incorporated it later.

I would consider it a very good thing and suspect you would have to look long and hard to find any newer BR action made without one. I've been wrong before though.

I have a Rem Model 7 in 6.5x47L that really needs to have the bolt go visit Greg Tannel to get the firing pin bushed for this reason. Lots of primer flow......

The .062 is seen as an improvement with about any round but especially the high pressure one. I have bushed all my firing pins on my rem 700 actions. I left one nominal diameter on a 308 to see how much difference the small firing pin makes vs just tightening up the clearances. Both are nice. For the .062" pins from PTG, i bore the bushing just .001" oversize. Thought it might be too tight but works like a champ.
