Suppressor use on Bolt action

Howdy,

I have ordered an Otter Creek Labs Hydrogen L to use on my Hunting/Prs rig. Never having used a suppressor on a bolt action before I have a question. How dirty does the use of a suppressor make the barrel and action? In your experience, do you change your cleaning timeline? dirtier faster? more gunk and carbon in the action/bolt face?

Thanks in advance for any answers. I'm just wanting to be prepared, and hopefully not lose accuracy.

On a prairie dog shoot three years ago I shot just over 900 rounds of 223 thru a suppressed AR without cleaning anything. I know you're asking about suppressed bolt guns but I would think if an AR can run that many rounds suppressed without cleaning you shouldn't worry about extra cleaning on your bolt gun.
I do shoot bolt guns suppressed and my cleaning routine is unchanged.

There is no difference. I have shot 200 shots through .308 suppressor on one range visit. Gun was as dirty as usual.

Expect the crown to get crusty and expect your chamber to get carbon in it, brass will be dirty. That's about it. When I was heavy into PRS, I'd shoot 200-400 rounds a weekend and never miss a shot due to lack of mainteance.

Do youself a favor and store them muzzle down as occasionally as the suppressor will shed chunks of carbon from within. I am assuming that this is from expansion and contraction during firing as they get quite warm. Or, if storing muzzle up, I'll leave a fired case in the chamber to catch any carbon chunks that drop down. These pieces are the most harsh abbrassives I have ever seen. Not good for lugs or barrel.

Do you guys leave the can attached to the rifle the majority of the time, or remove when done for the day??

Depending on rifle length, detach them. My buddy’s rifles with cans don’t fit in the safe or cases for transport. So he has quick detach cans.

I leave one of mine on all winter on my main day bolt rifle, hard case(52")for travel. Barrel is 21.75, stock is carbine style that adjusts. No cleaning from fall to spring. Only extra cleaning is at the muzzle.

Carbon aside, you'll probably notice a lot of other differences using one. They don't just quiet down the gun, they change the recoil impulse, add heat, and mirage.

A non quality suppressor with change point of impact more too. May have to adjust or change load slightly. All the harmonics change.

No issues cept on the crown.
On my pdogs shoots I've run over 400 rounds some days with no accuracy problems.
On those busy days I'll run a swab every 100 rounds or so just to wipe down the bore.
