How do you get enough support for a heavy 28+ inch barrel with a floated stock? My next rifle will probably be a 7mm-08 or straight 284. One guy I met recently recommended a long action to spread the load over a longer base, plus bedding for maybe 6 inches forward of the action. I would like to stay with a short action though.

I live in new york state,how unfortunate !
Bedding is good just up to and behind the recoil lug.The one good thing about a pressre point at near the tip of the stock is it is easily removed if it doesnt work out.

The support comes from having an action that accomodates enough tennon on the barrel to support such a barrel! Fortunately most modern actions have this feature.

My .300 WSM is built on a BAT 3LL action with a 34", straight Ø1.25" barrel and free floated. It shoots 1/4 MOA with 230 Hybrids. BAT 3LL actions do not have an unusual tenon length and the barrel appears to be more than adequately supported. If you know a mechanical engineer, ask him or her to do a cantilevered beam calc, taking into account bolting torque when the barrel is screwed into the action. I think you will find that FUD circulated about barrel support is mostly unfounded.

If its for a rifle you are going to carry around (not that you would use a long heavy barrel) then go the conventional way of action supporting barrel. But if your going for a target rifle with a long heavy barrel then doing it the other way around makes sense to me. Reduces any stress on the action. Mind you in an action such as a barnard I would have no problem putting something heavy on it as the action is strong enough to deal with it. I know its been done, but put 30 inches of 1.25" straight barrel off say a remington 700 and I think its really pushing the limit of what that action was designed to support. Why risk it? Another benefit of barrel blocks is the action is free floating therefore you dont have to worry about bedding issues.
