suppessor on a marlin XT22TR or 981T possible ?

Hi guys,

I would like to buy a Marlin XT22-TR or a 981T which are both tube magazine guns, I really love their look with the tube under the barrel.

But the problem with the tube is it prevents from threading the barrel and add a suppressor to the gun. And I really need a suppressor to shoot in my garden...

So do I have to abandon the idea of buying a tube gun, or is there a way to adapt a suppressor on them?

Thank you much for your help and sorry for my English I'm French (sorry for this too lol )

A possibility which just occurred to me: it may be possible for your gunsmith to remove the tubular magazine, shorten it 1" to 2" (~26mm to 52mm) and reinstall it - I have seen this done with CF lever action rifles with tubular magazines, but someone more familiar with these two Marlin models will thave to chime in as to whether that is possible of not. You will still have to deal with the front sight and one other problem (see below).

It is probably possible to have a 1/2-28 by 1/2-28 (or metric equivalent; I'm not familiar with what thread series may be available to you, but that really isn't of major concern for this discussion) adapter machined to thread on the end of the barrel and clear (barely) the end of the tubular magazine of either of these models, thus extending the barrel sufficiently to add a suppressor. BUT, you still have two problems left to deal with: (1) the front sight will have to be moved back and reinstalled in a new position behind the newly threaded area (not a real big deal, but something to consider) and (2) a real biggy as it will be an ongoing annoyance; once you screw the suppressor on, it's diameter will prevent you from loading the tubular magazine unless you remove the suppressor and reinstall it after loading/reloading the magazine.

I realize you really like the tubular magazine format, but unless you are really set on the tube magazine Marlins above all else, the 7 shot removable magazine XT22 is a better candidate for a suppressed rifle - that one will only require relocation of the front sight. There are also at least three versions of the 7 shot clip magazine version (XT-22RZ, VR and MVSR) that come set up for scopes only and have no iron sights - fitting any of these three with a suppressor is only slightly harder than falling off a log for any gunsmith.

You could do an oblong suppressor. Shape it egg shaped and for reloading you would rotate the can 90-180 degree's load the tube and then rotate the can back into position for shooting.

Sort of like using Silencerco's pistol cans but have one made for rimfire and just rotate it partially out of the way for reloading.

@Outrider27, thank you for thisvaluable informations ! That's why I prefered posting my question here on this expert board instead of posting on a french board, people like you are rare on our boards :)
I'm going to contact a gunsmith to see if it's doable as you said, and at a normal price. Thanks again.

@jonbearman, yes of course why they wouldn't allow it? It's a cheap part with a great use in the garden :)

@Minesweeper3433, thanks for the suggestion, I've never seen an egg shaped suppressor, but I'm going to search for some infos on this !

Have you considered a low velocity round; Aguila Colibri, CCI Quiet, etc? I wouldn't hestitate to look at lower velocity air guns, also. Being so concerned about volume would make me wonder how close neighboring homes are and if there is an adequate backstop to shoot a 40gr piece of lead at 1,000 fps towards.

A gunsmith told me I can use an ammo called "22 Long Z", it is very quiet even without a suppressor. It is accurate at a distance of 30meters, which is enough for me to shoot in my garden (I dont have a football stadium).

So I think I'm going to order this Marlin XT22-TR and use it at home with long Z bullets, fingers crossed they will be no noise.

I also hope these Marlin are still made in Kentucky for their quality, but I really doubt it since Remington bought Marlin people say their gun quality is not as it were before.

They allow moderator's in france?

Jon, in much of Europe the use of a suppressor is considered a politeness to your neighbors if you want to shoot a .22 in the back yard, and buying a suppressor is no more complicated than buying a sling, a set of scope rings or any other accessory. On the subject of suppressors, they take a whole different view than the US government, regardless of how complex and/or difficult it is for a private citizen to own a firearm on which to put the suppressor. Startled me no end when I found that out....
