Sunshade for new scope Yea or Nay

I am putting together a new coyote hunting rifle. I am planning to order a new scope from Midway. Should I also order a sunshade? If so how long should I go? The scope is a Leupold Vari-X II 4-12X40 and I will be mounting it on a RRA Predator Pursuit AR15. Most of my coyote hunting is done in the winter with snow on the ground. On sunny days there can be a lot of glare from the snow. I have never used a sunshade on my scope before, will it help or hinder things?

BobinIL: Yes to the sunshade, and I personally prefer the shorter versions, 2 1/2' overall. I also get the screw-on lens caps. These 2 'accessories' are always ordered with my Leupolds. You're getting a really nice scope: I have several and they are my 'mid-range' first choice.

My new Leupold 6.5 X 20 EFR came with a sunshade. Make sure you don't buy a duplicate.

Yes for the shade & given your intended use, I'd say 3' - 4' ought to be enough. Longer may tend to get in the way.

There are also screw-in anti-reflection 'filters' that look like a small version of the grids used over ceiling lighting fixtures. Basically they're made up of a bunch of very small size 'shades' of very short length, mounted in a threaded ring that screws into the front objective. You can still use a shade in front of that, if needed.

The original purpose is to cut down on reflected glare off the front objective element, that otherwise could surprise prey,two- or four-legged) or alert them to your presence.

This shows the concept but not sure where you'd find one big enough for your 4-12x40.

You should be able to find one of those FlashKills big enough-- I have one on my 12x42x56 NSX..

I use a four inch shade on my coyote gun . It does two things for me . It keeps any sunlight from reflecting off the front lens, that might spook an animal coming in and, it keeps the front lens dry if it's raining or snowing . The shade will inhibit the light gathering qualities of the scope, but only slightly . I like the flip caps . They work well to keep dust, rain, and snow off when you're moving from stand to stand, and they open quickly if you get a surprise shot .
