Suitable eye relief on a 300 WSM

Hey guys,

My Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x turned up today and I am one happy guy with the quality. This one is to go on my Kimber Pro Varmint in 204.

I am seriously considering the purchase of another 4200, a 2.5 - 10 x 40 for my 300 WSM. However, the eye relief seems a bit short at around 3.5 inches, or am I wrong? The old Shortmags site use to recommend scopes with an eye relief of at least 4 inches.

I undestand that the Elite 4200's have a constant eye relief, can someone clarify that for me please?

I see that the Burris Fullfield with Ballistic Plex has drop charts for the 300 Winchester Magnum, I understood that these scopes had a very short eye relief, and not recommended by some.

Do any of you other shooters have the 4200 series scopes mounted on 300 mags? I have been whacked in the head before - a Redfield 3-9 x 40 on a 30-06, so want to try and minimise this from happening.

My mate who shot my .243 for the first time, now wears a cresent shaped scar! Just goes to show that virtually any calibre is capable of this.

Regards,

Michael.

'Constant eye relief' means that you don't have to get your eye closer to the scope to get a good sight picture, no matter what magnification you have the scope turned to. On most scopes, especially higher magnification ones, you have to get closer to the eye piece as you get closer to max. This can get painful if your gun bucks hard. Constant eye relief is a good thing. I'm not a big guy and I elk hunt with a 300. With practice you can keep the blood off your face without too much trouble.
