Suggestions requested

First, the budget is somewhat limited. I want to build a club comp gun in .223. The caliber is not negotiable. Friend have taken Rem 700 actions and barreled them(Lilja), added a fairly nice 4oz trigger from Rifle Basics (?) etc, the McMillan Edge HV stocks for a sub mill rifle system. They are very decent shooters, but I'm thinking I can build it better. Looking for suggestions. My total cost on this cannot exceed 1,400.00. Suggestions.

Most likely 100/250 yards. No weight restrictions at my local club and I don't foresee going on the road. Optics and dies are already present.

As far as the rifle itself is concerned, I think ANY money you spent would not give you the "bang-for-the-buck" you may be looking for. Would a better action help? Maybe to some small (read that VERY SMALL) degree. Would a better barrel, as in a cut rifled barrel help? It is doubtful you would see any difference. The stock obviously is as good as any>>> I would put my money into a NightForce BR 12-42 with a reticle that gives the tiniest crosshair / dot you can find. That will take up your $1,400.00 with the MOST bang-for-the-buck you will get.. BUT you have to get the rifle you mentioned above first!

i would suggest looking into a used BR custom action complete rifle. look up shooters corner, owner is Bob White, he has a list of used guns and you can certainly find one in your price range. That way you get an action, stock, great trigger. You don't have to spend time and money truing, and you don't have to settle for lower grade components. More than likely the barrel will surely be able to do well in club matches, and when it becomes necessary to buy a new barrel its easy to get one fitted.

Thanks. Putting a NF scope on a rifle would be nice, but I already own the optics that I will be using. Been to the Bob White page and it appears he is limited on anything outside the 6mm calibers. He has a few, but nothing that I could find in a .223. Still looking.

No stock yet, and yes I know they are 450 or so. I might be able to add another 200 to the pot now that santa was good to me.

FWIW sub mil = < 0.001".
Assuming you want to stay with Rem. 700:
Search the classifieds for an already trued (as verified by the smith who did the work) 700 stocked in a HV or HBR stock, Jewell or Shilen trigger, rebarrel with a Green Mountain straight 1.2 OD 12 twist bbl.

Just going to toss this out there. Going back to Bob White. If you can get a good gun that can have a new barrel and bolt assy put on it... That would be a fantastic set up. Might give him a call and see what he thinks about that?
Sell the PPC bolt intrade for a 223 Bolt face... What would you really be out in a Higher end action? Say Stolle or something like that if you where able to sell the old one. And a good barrel in 223....

Just an idea to provoke some thoughts.

Thank you, now that makes sense. Even to me. Guys and gals too(?) I am simply shopping for ideas, parts, actions etc...

I know of two Remingtons available, one is a 722 and the other a 700, that have already had everything you need done to them. The only thing you would need to do is rechamber from 222 to 223. I think they both have jewell triggers, but not sure. Both have McMillan stocks and both look great. Frankly, either one would outshoot a 223, but if you want a 223, then the rechamber would do it. I won't quote a price here except to say they will be below budget including the rechamber. If you have an interest PM me and I'll pass along the info.

Maybe I'm crazy but I think it's doable on your budget......
Donor R700 $400.00
Barrel $350.00
True action and chamber maybe $300.00.?.?

That leaves $400.00 - $600.00 for the stock and bedding etc..... which is really tight but you might be able to find a gun that has been shot out and then just change out the barrel to what you want. The action would probably already be trued which would save you a little.
Just my .02 but for what you want, I think you can do it....

PTG had their action combos on a Christmas special for around $460-475 I think. You might be able to talk them into that price yet.
