Suggestions on modifying butt stock for rear bag.

I have a Richards microfit benchrest stock that I probably need to modify.
The bottom of the buttstock is around 1.1 inches wide and is way too wide
for my rear bag.

Looking for ideas on how to narrow the bottom with typical shop tools.
I have a table saw, radial arm saw, belt sander, small band saw.

Should I buy a wider rear bag, send it to someone to mod, do it myself??

Do you have any hand tools? A drawknife, spokeshave, or a good rasp, are all tolls which will do this quickly and easily. You can save a little labor with the band saw. A coarse belt on the belt sander will work too. I prefer to do a lot by hand. I figure, if I have to work harder to screw something up, my natural lazy streak might keep me from doing so. WH

For my 6 XC, in an H-S Precision stock with a very STEEP Toe to, Pistol grip Angle,.. I made a 4 inch long by 5/8 ths inch Wide, TAPERED "Toe Rudder" braced with, an "L" shaped Angle iron and One Screw to,..
"Ride the Bags" better AT, the Correct Angle needed to, "Do" THIS !
And it Does,.. THAT,.. very well, Now ! Getting, 5 shot, "Bug-Holes" in, the Low 2's and 3's !
A Good "Toe Angle" ( and a Well designed, Bag Rider with, a smooth, sliding FIT ) is, worth,.. the Effort !

I think you could use table the table saw to cut 2 cuts on either side of the butt stock at an angle you like and move the stock closer to the blade till the bottom edge was the width you needed. The jig you would need to hold the stock would take way longer to make than the cutting itself. Centerline of barrel channel would have to be parallel to rip fence, top edge of barrel channel would have to be parallel to saw table, and centerline of butt stock would have to be 90% to the saw table. Make several cuts starting big and ending up at the right width for the bag. Many times more work to make the jig to hold the stock, than time and work to cut stock. When I make stocks they are all angles and flat cuts till the final smooth up, too many years making cabinets I guess.

Dont sand away at your stock would be my fist suggestion, that just seems like alot of unnecessary work.
You could order delrin rod and inlet a few threaded furrels into your stock ,then thread a bag rider on
maybe try some 5/8 rod it can be shaped easily.
Comes in a few different colors..black, white, and something else i forget.
If your real clever you can shap it to the bottom of your stch like a round wedge shape would look nice and clean, be super slippy in your rabbit ears and not cost a whole lot.
Just another thought.

Hey check this out is kind of what im talking about. Very simple maybe its the right angle for your stock or something like the photo was what i was talking about making with delrin rod

Yup,...This ^^^,... Match, the Leather Bag, ANGLES,..
Bottom Angle should Be Level with Bore with, a "Slight" TILT Up-Wards, to Ride smoothly, on the Bags Edges,..
NOT completely to, the "Bottom" of, the Bag ( for,.. NO "Drag" )
Look at Expensive BR Rifles in Bags, Pictures on YouTube,..
It's NOT,.. "Rocket Science"

Find or cut with a straight edge the final size width in masking tape and hand lay it straight down the toe and up the butt plate a bit. Measure your go to rear bag for this width. Measure the width of the ears and transfer masking tape on the stock for this as well.

That should give you a good idea of how much material you need to really remove.
If there is a lot of material you could take the major cuts with power saws , then sneak up with hand tools and final sanding.

If this seems too much , just give the guys at Protektor a call. Tell them what stock your have and them wait a few weeks for the stork to arrive.

Hit the simple button. I bought 2 wider bags. A tall one and a short one. Remember that I’m a stock builder. ;)
If you really want to, use a palm sander with 80 grit to start forming. Slow is good.
