Stupid question.. measuring... knife building

Mmmk... scold me if you must... But I cant read a measuring tape, and the tiny lines run together...

Im trying to find a better accurate way to measure holes in knife handles, the pins, and tube stock for knife handles..

some of this crap gets so small its hard to measure accurately to find out what size pins I need for what size hole... its all in fractions and being a reloader I dont do fractions... I do calipers... I like decimals...

this 1/16, 3/32, 5/32, 1/64 is for the birds

Is there something out there that makes figureing out what size hole you got in a knife handle requires what size pin???

my calipers cant measure these tiny holes...

Cuz Im about to buy an inch of every size and label them for quick reference lol

Are you my twin? All your posts are eerily similar to stuff I’m getting into at roughly the same time. I’ve been watching knife making videos and getting tools ready. I’ve also been building a reloading room with my dad since things with the military have finally come to an end, and my 1 year old is more manageable now that he’s becoming more of a little person.

Good luck with the knife making! Post your finished product when your done please! Sorry I couldn’t help with your original question. Just thought it was cool with the stuff you’ve been getting into.

I have a caliper that does fractions. measure you hole or pin, set the lock screw, and scroll thru the different measurements. Be aware, these calipers will do 1/128th. Round it up to something more practical, or down??

what about a set of drill bits,,there all marked,,if it fits its right,,I think
I like the drill bit idea!!! You can buy a cheap set of #1 thru #60 drill bits in a metal case for about $40 on amazon. Use them like a set of plug gauges. #1 = .228 thru #60 = .040. If you need to cross reference to a fraction then get a decimal equivalent chart like pictured. Just a thought.20180315_113515.jpg

I have done a bunch, always by trial and error ...many variables ,you need wiggle room for lining things up and room for the epoxy to lock everything up and fill voids .Too tight a tolerance can be a bad thing. Just my experience.

I make knives
and I just match the pin size with the bit size. 1/8" brass rod = 1/8" bit.. You really need to learn the conversions though. i have most memorized, but the simple way is to divide the top fraction number by the bottom number. That will give you the decimal equivalent. Example: 1/4" 1 divided by 4=.25". 1/8 is half that, but 1 divided by 8 = .125".

for 3/16" it's 3 divided by 16 = .1875"

Unless you are using already made knife blades and blanks you decide the hole size. If you are buying blanks the supplier should have the pin size listed on his website..

ya.. pin sizes arent listed... Im not going to make blades. just buying pre fab blanks and playing with that for now.

I went ahead and bought 12 inch rods of each size I could find... ill cut an inch off each one and label them... have a go to sizing parts... then Ill know what size works best... makes it easier on me... I wanna do and not think as hard... make it more enjoyable to start

There are all kinds of things that go through those holes in a knife blank. Mosaic pins, tubing, solid rod/pins,etc . You don't have to fill the whole tight, you want room for epoxy...you don't even need holes drilled all the way through the handle scales...a small hole or dimple at those holes turns into a hidden epoxy "rivet" . There are no rules set in stone, imagination rules. Here is a blank I just sold,as you can see the options are endless . You can put a 1/16" piece of brass brazing rod through the 1/2" holes, nobody will know.
