Stuck between 7 SAUM and 7 Rem Mag

Alex: We found a fragment between the skin and ribs on the opposite side, that was it. We didn't spend a whole lot of time assessing the damage though. We wanted to get it deboned and hanging in the trees as quick as possible due to the warm temps. A big positive to the nosler is stw performance in a much shorter package. It fits well inside the 3.825 wyatts cfe-9 mag box with a 195 above the shoulder junction. C.O.A.L is 3.73 at the lands. I have been using RE33 as it gave great speed and phenomenal accuracy. As soon as I found that load I ordered over a 100 lbs of RE33 so I had it for customers and myself. I believe if a guy keeps the barrel cool and clean the 28 will last 800-1000 rounds. For hunting that's a lifetime. Let me know if you have any other questions on it as I would be glad to help you out.

I think you guys are worrying too much

I'm not stressing or worrying AT ALL. I simply was suggesting a couple points to put on a pros and cons list to decide between two cartridges.

I don't know why you stress so much about that! I think you're worrying too much! ;)

The 7WSM and the SAUM are not close to the same in accuracy. Lots of 7 WSM's have showed and up for 1000 yard BR and none made the cut. They just didn't shoot good enough. The same is true for the 7 REM mag. Now I have seen a couple of 7 Saums shoot really good. In fact the last two years one of the hottest guns at Williamsport has been a 7 Saum in both heavy and light. I believe the barrel would last way longer on the Saum then the other two. In my 30 cal a 308 Baer verses a 300 WSM, the throat wear was way different. The Baer would move .030 or more in a season. My 300 WSM would only move .002 to .003 in 3 seasons. That is a big difference in barrel wear. Matt

I got both. All i want to say is that saum brass ia super expensive

++1 . I'd say the SAUM uses less powder, but brass life and availability certainly swamp powder.

Although I have no use for Bergers for hunting, that was a great shot that was made. That is a great caliber/rifle it appears. I have to agree with the Re33. My 7 mags love re33 under a 160 Partition and shoot 1/2-3/4 inch groups easily at 3056 fps.

Slmn9s: I hear ya. Im not too worried about it ;) I just hear people say it all the time and I always think how could they forget it lol. Then again sometimes when I walk out into the shop to get something I will get there and forget what I went out there for. Give it another 20-30 years and I might forget my ammo ;D

sbhooper: Im really liking that caliber for high performance hunting rifles as its easy to tune and every gun Ive done shoots the same load lights out. The re33 is definitely a great powder as the velocity gains are great without the leaking primer pockets.

That's when you call home and tell someone how to get into your shop and have them get your ammo to ups for overnight delivery to wherever you are. It might cost a hundred dollars but if that's the load you chose then nothing can be bought that could replace it.

I don't know why everybody stresses over being able to find factory ammo while on a hunt. Have any of you actually forgot your ammo at home? I haven't for a hunt or any of the matches I have gone to. I have a checklist for hunting and matches. I think you guys are worrying too much about something that never happens, lol. For myself Ive had the saum and wasn't a huge fan of it due to the finickyness of it. For blasting steel and critters past 1000 I would seriously look into the 195 berger as it is a complete game changer. I have built quite a few 28 noslers in the last month and they are pushing the 195 at 3100+ fps. Accuracy has been phenomenal as every one will hold .3 moa vertical or better at 1025 yds off a bipod. That's the distance I tested them at. Plug that into jbm and in order for a 300 gr berger to match it for wind drift and drop the 300gr has to move 3050 or faster, no easy task. They have had extremely wide nodes as well. A full gr spread in powder is a 1/4 moa group at 400 yds off the bipod for the ladder test. I was on an elk hunt last week and I had filled my tag on my first ever bull. A buddy and I spotted a bull at 1150 yds so I set my gun up for him and dialed the drop, 20.2 moa, and the first round went into the boiler room. Now for all you guys saying that's way too far what about wind factors and all that yada yada. At that altitude at 1000 yds there is only 26" of wind drift in a 10 mph wind. So that gives me a + or - 4mph window of wind to be in to hit the vitals on an elk. That's half the wind drift of my 284 Winchester w 180 hybrids back home at the fclass range. Now since there was about 8" of spin drift to the right and 2mph of wind right to left I left the wind at 0 knowing with 100% certainty that bull was going to get drilled in the boiler room. There is no way we could have gotten closer to it as there was dead timber and a steep hill that would have taken 4 hours to hike up to get closer. After it was killed it took 2.5 hours to get to with horses. Total of 7 hours to get there, quarter it, drag it up the hill to horses, and get back to camp. It was the best hunt Ive ever been on. Great scenery. We filled all our tags, 3 bulls and a cow. Two 5x5s and my 6x5. No easy task on public land in CO. We caught trout in the stream and had them for dinner. And everybody made it home safe.

Right on Ryan! Who does forget there ammo? It’s certainly not a reason to dictate what calibre you chose! Chose the calibre that suit your personal wishes and go with it! 28 Nosler and 195 grain berger = a match made in heaven!

I seek enlightenment. Why not use belted cartridges? I have 2 custom belted rifles, one on an 03 Remington in 358 Norma Magnum built by Harry McGowan and one custom built 450 Marlin built on a Mauser 98 cut to shoot 500 grain bulletts built by Rick Burris.

Both rifles will feed even if upside down. The 358 shoots 1 1/16" at 300 yards. The 450 is a dangerous game rifle with open sights only but prints 3 shots in one hole at 50 yards.

I have zero problems with resizing brass or reliability. The 358 pushes a 250 grain Hornady SP at 3,200 FPS and the 450 pushes av500 grain Hornady at 2,000 FPS.

Just curious since this is kind of a “belt vs non belt” discussion.

Has anyone of late actually tried a belted magnum, mainly the 300 Win Mag or the 7mm Remington Mag and actually controlling the headspace with the belt as originally conceived.

For years, we have always heard……”Fireform, then set the die to headspace on the shoulder”.

Are we just assuming that using the belt to control headspace is detrimenta?

Anytime i've sized right to the belt on any of my 5 belted mags I would push the shoulder back too far and have case seperations.
