Stripping an Anschutz Stock

Am going to up-date the finish on my Anschutz 1913 stock and wonder what is the best product to strip the old finish off the stock?

The original finish is typical Anschutz target rifle, looks like it is a combo finish and dark stain.

Thanks for the help.

cirtistrip from brownells. It is one of the few with all the bad chemicals still in it to actually work.

+1 on the Citristrip. Most local hardware stores around here stock it.

A Mod 7 refinished by the owner with some sort of black paint expertly applied with a cheap brush! ;D

After one application of Citristrip. Not only was the black paint history, but most of the original finish. A second application finished the job.

The end result, one Mod 7 "back from the dead"! ;)

SWEET! I bought a rifle that the entire stock was coated with some kind of ripple paint with plastic chips in it. Even the glass bedding and recoil lug pocket was painted with it! Fortunately there was an ultra smooth finish underneath & was easily scraped off with a plastic scraper and a fingernail. Nice job on the 7.

Bill Pa, NICE work! I was going to recommend another stripper but after seeing your stock I'll use citristrip next time ;D It took 4 applications of an eco-friendly stripper (Sherwin Williams, Smart strip) to achieve your results.......... I've really missed your input @ Savage shooters. Nice to know you post here! Dale

Most hardware stores carry Fornby's wood refinisher. Good stuff, melts off the old finish (with removal via 4-0000 steel wool, but leaves the patina. great results and fast.

Take your stock to a local company that refinishes furniture and let them strip it for you. Quite likely it will cost less and be way less aggravating.
