Strange headspace issue

One time I had a case neck separate from the shoulder and stay in the chamber of my 22 BR. I had been a little overzealous in turning into the shoulder. Could this be a possible cause of the problem? jd

Take a full sized case cover it with a magic marker or dykum. Allowing it to dry. Then insert the marked up case into the chamber. Try closing the bolt. The remove the case and check for scuff markswhere the case is rubbing.

Maybe even with a bullet seated.

This is how I found my last carbon ring just past the end of the mouth. The case checked out, but the bullet came up with scratches as it rode over the carbon ring.

I confirmed it with my Hawkeye Borescope.;)

I have about 1000 rounds through a Howa 1500 .308. this past weekend it stopped chambering rounds, it felt as if I was trying to chamber a NO GO gauge, Almost closed the bolt... but not quite. I've been cleaning the s*#& out of the chamber, thinking maybe there was just a build up of carbon around the shoulder area. Hasn't worked yet. Has anybody experienced this?

I know it's not a sizing issue with my brass, I've been using a go gauge trying to fix it. Still won't close.

Won't close on the go gauge? They don't go into the chamber. Only to the shoulder. Something is screwing up headspace.

Strip the bolt. Then see if the bolt closes on the go gauge.

Is the barrel loose?

I checked it, it's good. So I'm starting to get the bolt to close on the go gauge (not forcing it) I think the chamber was just SUPER DIRTY!!

Thanks
Suggest you get a Tipton chamber/action cleaning kit available at Midway. If your chamber was that dirty surely your lug recesses need attention. Less than $20.00 and will keep all your rifles good to go......... Of course you can spend WAY more money on a action cleaning tool but won't clean any better. Just my .02

Back in March, you had a problem with closing the bolt on your rifle. Did you come to a final resolution and get the rifle to work? Some of us in the peanut gallery would like to know.

hope you checked your lugs for bein galled after the hard closing, been down that road, I grease the lugs well but not to overly and I keep that locking lug area clean or try to, hope you get it figured out

Several times I have seen a ring of brass come off of the case neck after firing. Whether left from deburring, crimping, or whatever, I do not know. The ring either sticks in the chamber preventing the next round from chambering, or it falls in the bolt channel and get pushed back into the lug recess where it jambs in place. If you do not spot it, or use the right tools to find it, it can be very frustrating. (Like finding a piece of walnut hull in the lug recess. Ughhhhhhh.)

I have an action tool that uses cotton swabs to clean out the lug recess. I also have several sets of nylon brushes in various conditions from use. They can be very useful for pushing up into a chamber and pulling out cases left after head separation or case neck after separation at the neck/shoulder junction. "Waldo" is there, you just have to find him, remove him, and close the bolt.

I took Gotchas advice and bought a chamber cleaning brush, and I cleaned the S#$&@ out of that rifle, and it's gone back to working flawlessly! Thanks for the interest in the issue, sorry for not getting back to you. Sometimes I ignore the internets.

Thanks!

Good call man, that did the trick... I think there was just build up in my chamber. I had started using Wipe Out foam, and it works so good, but if not careful a lot of that garbage can run back into the chamber.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. At least it was something that you could take care of and nothing was broken.
