I was at the range today and something very strange happened. I was shooting my proven Remington Model 7, 243 that I've had for several years. My first shot went exactly where it was suppose go, 1.5" high at 100 yards but my second shot didn't hit the paper or the target backer! Shots fired from the bench off a rest.
I immediately checked the barrel and saw a few sticks of unburned powder near the throat. I noticed that the spent primer of the round in question had a noticably larger diameter indentation than the other spents rounds. I didn't notice any differance in recoil or report from the shot in question. The next four shots were right on target.
I was shooting a load I've used hundreds of times, (40.0 grain IMR 4350 85 Sierra HPBT, Federal 210 match primers, seated to 2.700 COL, Remington Brass). Scope was a Leupold VX II, which I've used for years and is totally reliable.
I used a single stage press, (RCBS) and always weight each load and visually inspect charged cases before seating bullet.
I never had this happen before and I've been reloading since 1970. I'm really baffled. Any thoughts.
