Straight Forward 7MM SAUM Question

Has anyone figured out the best way to load a 160 NAB, or a 168 VLD, with the base of the bullet up to the shoulder, and still be loaded to magazine length in a short action?

Who's short action?

Who's bottom metal?

Is the reamer available to rent, and who has it?

I too, would like to build a hunting rifle in 7 SAUM that will feed---in a short action. ;)

I don't think anything above a 145 speer will do that. Both 130 and 145s will fit the short mag and keep their base right at the nech.shoulder junction.

mine works fine with 130 speers btail and flat, and 145 speer btails.. Also sings with 120 ballistic tips and h4350. It will shoot the 168 great, but wants to be 3.300long and won't eject a loaded round thru the port.

So, am I correct in assuming that as a short action, it's a single shot only ordeal, and if a guy wants 160's (and heaven forbid--180's) to feed and function properly, we need to go long action?

Everybody tells me a long action is better and I'm sure it is. That being said, I've been shooting the 168 vld's in a short action repeater with good results. Shooting .3'' groups at 100yds right at 3000fps out of a 26'' shilen 1 in 9. Alpha ind. mags allow me a 2.98'' coal. The reamer is a standard minimum sami spec 3.017'' coal to touch the lands so jamming is not an option for a repeter. I've been jumping the 168's and am very happy with the results. A long action will give you much more freedom with seating depths but running a short action repeter is possible. ;)

So you're off the lands .020-.030", correct?

Well, I guess there's hope afterall. Thanks for your reply. What action are you using?

You might try a M70 WSM action, particularly one with the controlled fedd push action (CRPF). This has a larger load / ejection port than the Remington's and that particular action seems to handle the short Mag cartridges better than the straight CRF action.

If you are open to running detachable mags take a look at Seekins precision WSM bottom metal. He has 5 rd mags that allow an overall length of around 3.140. The internal measurement is about 3.165. Very slight and easy modifications need to be made the your action to accommodate the longer cartridge that any half way decent gun smith will be able to do in a couple minutes.http://www.seekinsprecision.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&category_id=12&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=126&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=2
