Thinking of trying an 8.5 twist Brux on my stright 284. I have been using 1-9 twist barrels with good results. All shooting is done between 850 yards and 1000. Just wondering what the advantages and disadvantages some of you have seen between the two. At this point I am shooting Berger 180 grain hybrids. I see now Berger recommends a 1-8 twist.Any input would be appreciated ,thank you. Don

Don..........been shooting the 8.5 twist Brux in all of my 284's. Same bullet, absolutely no problem.

I moved from 9 twist to 8.5 recently. I am at sea level and have seen a slight increase in bc at long range with the faster twist. I might have had marginal stability in some conditions. Shooting pointed 180 Hybrids.

You also mentioned disadvantages. An 8.5 will have more torque than a 9 twist. I have both twists in 284, and do notice a difference when shooting them. If you shoot at 1000' or higher elevation, you shouldn't have any issues with a 9 twist.

Also you will have slightly more spin drift and aerodynamic jump but the difference is less then an inch in standard atmosphere with 10 mph full value crosswind.

All my shooting is done at 1700 feet above sea level. I have had good success with 1-9 twist barrels. I guess I am just wondering if any of you have seen better accuracy on average with an 8.5 twist?

Imho I feel that the 9 twist is more accurate. Also many of the top F open shooters will only use a 9 twist in their 284. If you use a shorter barrel, then you might consider a faster twist.

I have a 1:8 and a 1:9 rifles shooting 284. I mainly shoot at sea level and high temperature. I did not find any material difference. Right now I tend to keep the 1:9 blanks for the Shehane and use 1:8.5 or 1:8.75 for the straight 284. Since the Shehane is about 50-60 fps faster than the 284, the bullet is stabilized even at a slower twist. No noticeable difference in torque as well. I do not have experience in shooting at sea level in very low temperature. A faster twist in these conditions is preferable, particularly at 1000 yards. A 1:8.5 twist rate is probably the best compromise and it will allow you to experiment with heavier bullets than the 180gn Berger.

Thanks to everybody for their replies, if anybody else has two cents worth I'm all ears!:)

I was talking to a friend of mine this past weekend at the world open in Williamsport. He had a "vanilla"284 built over the winter with a 1-8 twist shooting the 180 grain hybrids and is doing quite well with it. Maybe I will just sell the farm and go whole hog with a 1-8 !:D

The 180 ELD is of far more interest to me and is an absolute sledgehammer,in multiple chamberings/platforms.
Care to share any load details(components and velocity) on the 180 eld m with the 284 win? I have been trying to get them to shoot with a 1 and 8.5 twist and holding vertical consistently over a 20 shot string has been the issue at 1000.
