The possibilities are only limited by imagination and the skill level of the painter. Both of which far exceed my budget, though! LOL!
There are some beautiful candy colors as well as pearls, that can look great as a solid color and be much more affordable than elaborate airbrush work.
If your wallet can stand it, there's no replacement for a super slick custom job done by a true artist, but, one can save a lot of money if you can find a hydrgrapic pattern that you like, and someone to do it right.
There are different hydro processes and IMO, they are not all created equal. The process I prefer is done exactly like a good paint job, but with the pattern applied before a (typically) clear top coat.
In a nutshell, it goes like this...sand and fill any imperfections in the stock, then prime, sand and fill anything missed.
The hydro patterns typically have a base color that goes on next..sometimes two. But, once prepped for the base color, it's applied and then followed by the hydro pattern.
Next is critical and is the top coat. What I prefer is automotive clear. If you don't want a high gloss shine, there are flatteners that can be added to clears.
Auto clear is the most durable top coat that I know of, period. I'm sure something will eat it off...maybe acetone or paint stripper, but I've never seen a gun cleaner affect it if wiped off in a reasonable time.
The hydro patterns can give a very nice look without spending a big fortune. I've done $100 clear coat only jobs, to jobs that had well over 40 hours in the paint work alone. A very slick solid color paint job is about $400 and so is a hydro dip job. I don't do the hydro in house. I do basic airbrush work and solid color paint jobs here. I have a motorcycle guy that does some unreal airbrush work for me, when it gets above my pay grade and talent level.
I like the idea of either a tangerine or brandywine with carbon fiber hydro pattern a lot.
Brandywine looks good just about no matter what. Beautiful color...but solid golds and silvers look good, as do pearl whites.
