I am going to have a gun be rebarrelled and was thinking I might have my guy paint it while the gun is "down"
I can't decide what I want any suggestions? I have done the flames a few times while beautiful I am thinking something else.

The possibilities are only limited by imagination and the skill level of the painter. Both of which far exceed my budget, though! LOL!

There are some beautiful candy colors as well as pearls, that can look great as a solid color and be much more affordable than elaborate airbrush work.

If your wallet can stand it, there's no replacement for a super slick custom job done by a true artist, but, one can save a lot of money if you can find a hydrgrapic pattern that you like, and someone to do it right.

There are different hydro processes and IMO, they are not all created equal. The process I prefer is done exactly like a good paint job, but with the pattern applied before a (typically) clear top coat.

In a nutshell, it goes like this...sand and fill any imperfections in the stock, then prime, sand and fill anything missed.

The hydro patterns typically have a base color that goes on next..sometimes two. But, once prepped for the base color, it's applied and then followed by the hydro pattern.

Next is critical and is the top coat. What I prefer is automotive clear. If you don't want a high gloss shine, there are flatteners that can be added to clears.

Auto clear is the most durable top coat that I know of, period. I'm sure something will eat it off...maybe acetone or paint stripper, but I've never seen a gun cleaner affect it if wiped off in a reasonable time.

The hydro patterns can give a very nice look without spending a big fortune. I've done $100 clear coat only jobs, to jobs that had well over 40 hours in the paint work alone. A very slick solid color paint job is about $400 and so is a hydro dip job. I don't do the hydro in house. I do basic airbrush work and solid color paint jobs here. I have a motorcycle guy that does some unreal airbrush work for me, when it gets above my pay grade and talent level.

I like the idea of either a tangerine or brandywine with carbon fiber hydro pattern a lot.

Brandywine looks good just about no matter what. Beautiful color...but solid golds and silvers look good, as do pearl whites.

Just some thoughts.--Mike Ezell

I'm also a fan of solid colors, especially pearl white, oxblood, candied or metal flake primary colors.

But, I personally really like subtle details, like painting the bolt slot a different color, top edges next to barrel channel a different color, etc.

Funny you should mention that. I do just that from time to time. In all honesty though, I usually do it when I have reason to...like the gun being re bedded for a different action, etc. Painting the top edge around the action and the bolt notch can hide stuff like that...and look like it was meant to be that way all along. LOL! Hey...it WORKS!

I pu a huge scratch on my own(thankfully) rifle a while back when a socket broke while removing the barrel. It's brandywine..you just can't touch that stuff up because it's a two stage transluscent color, and it ever look right. I plan to do pretty much what you describe to fix it, eventually. In the meantime, I'm gonna put a sticker over it. LOl!

Kind of like a flame job but with a liquid look to it. With the points coming to like a glob on the end instead of a point like a flame. Choose some cool/ice type colors......There it is......Having one of those Flash Backs we were all warned about in the 70's....I had better lay down for a bit...........o_O

Rick, are you having a Magic Bus moment?

I had one hydro done in Walnut. It looks like a fine walnut stock. As was said already your and your painter's imaginations are unlimited.

I have an artist that will do whatever I decide just trying to decide to I do something completely out of the box different or keep it simple for re-sale since I don't keep anything very long??

I have looked into dipping, great process I just like the Artistic side of having it custom done by a painter. Makes it more personal to me I guess.
I am thinking White bass with light and dark gray flames at the moment. I have done flames before but not like that.

Something fairly simple and looks great are ghost flames or ghost whatever.

You have seen a few of the guns Kenny painted for me. What do you think rick another flame job or something full boat crazy! lol

Saw a drag car with a cracked granite paint job. Was spectacular. Lightning on front end going into cracks in the granite down the sides iirc.

I think if i were going to have Kenny do some flames i would cut him loose with flames on black in a classic hot rod vibe....Enough clear to make it look a mile deep.

If you're talking about Kenny Prahl, I can't agree more. He did a Ghost Flame treatment over a Chevrolet Blue that was subtle yet beautiful.

Yes he did a beautiful job. If you remember you sent that gun to me for Kenny to do the work. he is a friend of mine and a tenant at one of my properties.
