Stock Paint

I recently aquired a 6 PPC on a Teddy action in a McMillan stock. The stock is in need of a face lift. What is the best way to remove the old paint, so as not to harm the stock itself? Being glued in,I don't want to get chemicals around the action to soften the glue. Secondly, what is a good paint to apply after the stock is preped? Any sugestions? Thanks, HogPopper.
