Stock Options/Opinions for a new F Class shooter

Joe C

Student of the 1911.
I'm a new guy here and it was advised by folks on another forum that this would be a great place to hang out and ask questions. That being said, here goes!

So, my barreled action is being built by Randy Gregory. The receiver is a Win 70 short action with a Rock 30" heavy palma taper barrel. Caliber is .240NMC. Jewel trigger. SIII 6-24x50 scope.

Up next I am working on what stock to purchase for the rifle for shooting F Open Class. I have already talked to Ray at PR&T and I don't think that is going to work out due to the M70 action.

Would you guys care to give me your thoughts regarding what stock would be a wise choice to get please. I am open to researching any suggestions you may have.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,
Joe

Joe,

I think a stock is a personal decision in regards fit & design. I think the best thing you can do is to attend a few matches and do your best to get behind rifles with stocks your interested in. Dont worry, just approach someone who has what your looking and tell him your story of trying to figure out what you want to get in a stock. By the time you take your next breath, most guys will have already said, "Heck, well go ahead, get behind it all you want, want to shoot a few rounds?"

There are probably more MBR Tooley & its clones out there than most others, but I think the lowboy PRT design is rapidly coming close. So that says alot right there.

My first stock design would be considered a MBR clone, love it. After the first yr, I added a adj cheek piece. Then after this yr, I went to add a 3-way butt, but found out there is not enough meat/width to install the one I want. In talking with my stock guy about this, he said "I was taking a BR stock and trying to turn it into a prone stock, dont! You need to get a prone stock." Words of wisdom there for sure. So I am waiting for my fully adjustable MasterClass/Bernosky Prone F-class stock. So this is a point to consider also.

Another design I really like was the Robertson Speedy Gonzeloz F-Class stock, but at this point they are not being made.

There are alot of good stocks out there, you just need to figure out what fits & feels best to you! I wish you luck..

Hi Joe,

I was wondering why you couldn't use a Win 70 with the PR&T F-Open stock? Is it because they won't inlet for them? If that's the case you could buy it uninletted, and send it to someone like Meridith to inlet for you.

I like Rods suggestion, check out the Bernosky F-Class stuff.

Flybuster,

Yes sir they will not inlet it. He said I should have just bought a savage or had him build a rifle. I was kind of disappointed to be honest with you. But alas, they are probably very busy and don't have time to mess with someone like me.

BUT, you guys have just made my day by pointing me towards Bernosky! I'll be calling him tomorrow asap as he has the color laminate that I want and a style I like. Not to mention it looks like he can do the inlet and pillar bedding! Now if that works out all I have to do is get a front rest and rear bag...as I have everything else either here or on the way including a new Oehler chrono and a couple of Sightron SIII scopes to try out when the rifle is done.

Thanks much for the help guys!

I have used Rays FTR Stock this year and been very impressed. His workmanship is second to none.

One thing you should know is that Carl Bernosky can duplicate the Precision Rifle and Tool stocks. He is making one for me right now in curly maple that will be incredible when it is finished. Once the rifle is complete I am going to do a write up on it and submit it for a Gun of the Week. I am thus far very impressed with Carl's communication, honesty, and willingness to correct for things beyond his control.

+1 to this ^^^. So far he has been great to deal with and I'm looking forward to seeing the project when it is done myself!...both yours and mine!

Well is he duplicating and taking advantage of another person's design and prototype ? Seems wrong to me.

I'm sure it will look great! I have always love the curly maple look! PR&T stocks are beautiful as welll track amazingly! I guess if I had to copy a design! What better stock to copy than a Low Boy by PRECISION RIFLE & TOOL!!!

I'm looking foward to seeing your rifle in Gun of the week and it will most likely be flattering to PR&T to have Their design make yet again another gun of the week.

Seems to me Ray could probably put his pattern on any blank you wanted. He was concerned about duplication when I sent one of his stocks out to be fitted for a Barnard, now I know why. (BTW MT guns did nothing of the sort! :) )

Ray at PR&T just made a stock for me on his F-Open LowBoy pattern using a Birdseye Maple blank I bought from Shirley McGee. He did an excellent job including inleting to my specification. I guess anyone with a duplicator can copy anything but I feel better working with the person who spent the time to come up with the design. I have three of Ray's stocks but all are single shot. I'm not sure how the F-Open design would work with a magazine action like an M70.

Okay rain164845, since you have volunteered more information to me and the world I now understand. Let me get this straight; You must be the guy who received a perfectly good stock from PR&T, once you received it "someone" somewhere in your world either broke it or in other words screwed up your fine new PR&T F-class stock you got from us. Ask yourself HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THIS? I'll let you in on something, Carl called us 2 weeks ago and ordered a F class stock it must have been for you, then called back the same day leaving a message on our machine to cancel that stock order. His customer had backed out because our lead time was 4 weeks plus! Now I understand why he cancelled the order. He just copied my stock. WOW, what a great guy! He is taking good care of you. And so you have been a good customer and have pointed out all his good things especially his ability and willingness to copy another company's innovations. I'm sure he appreciates that.
However, we also take very good care of our customers... As they have so graciously pointed out... PR&T is also able to communicate well, we deal in a world of reality, honesty, extreme accuracy and we have integrity. We are willing and able to man up, admit mistakes and offer resolution to difficult problems.

Sooner or later the truth has it's way of coming around. Sometimes the truth can hurt because it was not as we expected. Carl B. may be a stand up guy. Nevertheless, I really don't like being thrown under the bus for things I had nothing to do with. Something are better left alone and kept to ourselves... Carl may agree.

I can definitely Testify to this! Being I'm probably Precision Rifle & Tool's Biggest Headache (due to my lack of knowledge) Don't get me Wrong My FTR rig is nothing less than a fine peace of ART and I'll go as far to say it's as accurate as any FTR rifle that has ever won any Title or broke any Record! The only limiting factor to my FTR RIG BUILT BY PR&T IS ME!!!! I will also add that the smallest nick pick things that I wish I would have done different are the exact same things that RAY suggested and I was to HARD HEADED TO LISTIEN!

Edit: PR&T has had nothing but patience with me! Not only did they build me a rifle that is a true hammer. But Ray continues to give advice and help figure out what I'm doing wrong behind the rifle. Everytime I listen to Ray the problems go away! Sometimes It pays to open your mind and put your feelings aside. Ask Ray a question and you will receive a ansewer that he believes or knows to be the truth! NOTHING LESS!! If he doesn't know the ansewer his reply will be... I don't know. What more can you ask for???
