Stock inletting

Considering a basic inlet Kestros
How hard is it to inlet for a local Smith?
Any suggestions of someone to do it and approximate cost

The basic inlet seems like a significant operation, and it’s definitely an addition to a flat top. However as a customer, it doesn’t deliver a usable stock or even a DIY finish job, and a gunsmith, if they are set up to inlet a stock, is not likely to charge less.

I just opened the box today on this one. (Thank you,McMillan). I have gone down all the paths on this subject of inletting and pillar installation. Neither big, composite “M”aker loves doing these last steps, (it seems) or can really charge enough to make it a great use of their resources, but we customers are eternally grateful. It’s the tedious step where your project can really bog down, literally for years, or be passed up (especially when your action that is in use, is requested), as the classifieds can show.

I couldn't find a stock without substantial wait times so I bought a basic from Bruno's and inletted and bedded it myself. Turned out pretty good for a first-time inlet and first0time on a mill. It shoots awesome, which is what I was after. Id say go for it. I took my time and didn't have any issues. Just a lot of double checking before I started cutting.McMillan Inlet.jpg

Nice job. Inletting is the next thing I need to get comfortable with. You're braver than me!

I shoot an X-ring for F Class, but wanted one for ELR with an ARCA rail on it. I got the basic inletted stock for around $500, so I figured it was worth the chance to try and learn. It was not difficult at all really. Believe me, if I can do it, you can do it.

I have a couple of old stocks that don't mean anything to me. I'll dedicate a clean workbench and a day or two to go at it sometime soon.

That’s very nice. You shouldn’t have said how easy it was, because now I’ve got to ask, - how much? I have a couple basic inlets and a flattop.

Just take your time and think about every cut before you make it. It’s satisfying to cut the blank and finish it to completion. It’s a slow process!!!!!!
