stock inletting sizing a drop port

so this is a 6mm dasher drop port, borden brmxd .
so how big is the outlet in the bottom of the stock ?
just copy the action port
bigger than the port, how so ?
smaller than the action port ??
there is a thread with alex and dusty but both pics are no longer available

Looks like they're out of stock right now but this will save you a lot of trouble.

so with the couple of views of funnels, that are not in stock, i drilled some pilot holes and used a piloted 1/2" counter bore to remove material in steps, and then used a hand hispeed grinder to blend it all. now have a functioning drop port. cosmetic and clean up work needed.

I match the port the best you can, Some you cant go all the way or you cut into the trigger gaurd. Two reasons. I have seen cases wedge in a funnel shape. And if you ever drop a case ass first down the port and it gets stuck you want to be able to fit your finger in the port to push it back up quickly.

Resurrecting an old thread.

I’m going to bed a Kauger BRII drop port action in a Protektor laminated stock. Should I cut that port after I bed it? FYI the Kauger port does drop a GT case. Pictures for reference.

If just bedded and not a glue in, you can do it either way but I prefer to bed first, then cut the port in the stock. It also depends on if you use a pre-made funnel or not, which I strongly suggest. Those funnels make it way easier, IME, but the ones I've used had a roundish hole in the bottom. You can glue it to the action or not. Just don't leave any steps or edges for the case to catch on.

Nothing really wrong about making the exit hole like Alex did but it really only needs to be about a .500 round hole in the bottom of the stock. Above that is where it needs to be elongated and funneled into the hole itself. In principle at least, the hole just needs to let the case drop vertically, so .500 is big enough for that with a .473 case or smaller. It's certainly possible for a case to get wedged in there but I've shot DP's for years and never had it happen. Some of that might be due to using a nice, smooth funnel. I've done them without too. If ya get the angle close to right and smooth, it's just gravity from there. Mine have been 100%.
Alex brought up a good point about the case falling back end first into the port but when I've had that happen(rare once ya get used to loading one), the bullet end sticks up(it can't fall through like you'd think) and I just push the bullet end down and forward...and that picks the back end up and you just slide the cartridge forward a bit and it's good. In practice, it barely slows ya down. The trick is learning to load them. It's easy enough. When I toss a round on the feed ramp, I just toss it a tad forward at the same time so its center of gravity is in front of the port cut. This all sounds way more complicated than it is though. I love my drop ports. You'll be doing it right in 5 minutes or less once ya see what's going on in person. Very easy.

Overall, it's not super difficult to bed a dp but kinda a PITA at the same time. Especially on a glue in.

Bat has a couple of funnels on their site. I think the 1.350 round model will work fine on your action too.

I did a drop port on my 20 VT PDn 700 last year.

I originally cut a 1/2 inch funnel and 1/2 inch hole. I increased the hole size to 5/8 after I realized my little finger wouldn't fit if a piece of brass got stuck.

I'm with Alex on this one, I like to match the port. I have never had a problem this way with a stuck case and to me it's more aesthetically pleasing to me than just a round hole. The round hole looks out of place like an action bolt is missing,LOL

When I did mine I just made a .5 hole in the bottom. With the bolt back against the stop, the front of the bolt is where the edge of your hole should be, and a taper from the front of the action cut. Mike's post is spot on.

This is a Rem 700 drop port I did the bedding and case chute on. It's a .30 cal 1.875" length case and it drops out wonderfully.

Did you move the extractor and ejector to go out the bottom?

It's a PTG bolt with a mini extractor at 6:00 when the bolt is open. It came to me this way...works pretty slick.

Al, I would agree a case that long probably would need a bigger port. I was working for a 1.600 case.
